In 2017 the Honors College won a $10,000 seed grant from Rutgers Global to develop a short-term summer study abroad program in Malta. In 2018, more than a dozen Rutgers students will be traveling to the island nation in the Mediterranean for a course being taught by history professors Mayte Green-Mercado and Gary Farney. The course will center on Malta's ancient and modern history as a point of encounter in the Mediterranean and tensions over the ongoing refugee crisis.
"Developing an affordable, accessible short-term study abroad experience was a high priority" said Honors College director Brian Murphy, who is a professor of history and was the lead PI on the Rutgers Global grant.
Founded as a program in 1972, the Honors College has been a 'college' at Rutgers University-Newark since 1999. It enrolls about 300 students, most of whom are commuters and almost 65% of whom are eligible for Pell grants, making it one of the most diverse and economically accessible honors initiatives in the nation.

AN UPDATE ON GIVING DAY:
53 current Honors College students donated to show their sport to our program yesterday!
Our goal was 25. It wasn't all that easy to figure out how to donate to us. And yet 53 students did so to show their support to Rutgers, to the Honors College and its mission, and to one another.
Just based on student donations alone (not others we received) that puts us in the Top 20 among the 125 leaderboard options. It means that Honors College students were more than 8% of *all* Rutgers University students who participated in this event.
So congratulations to our students for showing their support and thanks to those who generously offered to match!
