this week we go over scoring in the clinch. It’s important to keep your posture as you break your opponents in order to maintain dominance in the clinch. Scoring damage can happen when you throw strikes as posture is broken, but it has to happen almost at the same time so the ref doesn’t step in to break the action. Kru shows how to catch an upwards “baseball bat” kick and get our opponent off balance. Extremely useful defense against heavy kickers, and it’s easy to throw their balance off by simply lifting up the leg.

this weeks clip is from our clinch session after class every Tuesday and Wednesday. Kru Joe shows the basics of the X lock and how to properly lock it in place. Rui on the other hand demonstrated how difficult it is to get out of this position. 😅

this months focus is kicks. We’re going over the bare basics of how we properly throw our switch kick, as well as what a strong check looks like. Balance is more important than power with a kick, because the balance will allow your kick to land harder. Making sure our checks are balanced allows for them to be more effective too.

Congrats to both our guys Jameer Wilson Chance for a great showing this weekend at the WKA Nationals. Chance started the day off bright and early with a first round KO, looked super comfortable and sharp in there. Jameer had one of his best fights so far and showed a ton of heart, but ended up dropping the split decision. Chance moved on to the next round and didn’t get the result we wanted, but there’s always so much to learn. Everybody is super proud of the hard work these two guys put in through camp, and we can’t wait for the next one. Thanks to Kru Joe and coach Dan for giving great cornering and preparation coming up to the fight, and thanks to everyone who supported!

this month we’re working on clinch and combining it with last months boxing to find entries and exits. Super basic technique, but it’s just as important to understand why you’re doing something as it is how. Position, balance, and control are the 3 most important things in clinch and this is a great drill to emphasize that.

Thursday night tech sparring with coach Dan , we love to tech spar here because it’s a safe way to effectively improve your game and fight IQ. Everything is controlled and we always make sure we have coaches watching over in case the power increases. Shout out to everybody this week who came in and worked hard. Let’s keep pushing through the summer.

You’ll see our new rules board when you walk in the gym. These aren’t really strictly for our gym, but for martial arts gyms in general. These are pretty self explanatory, and most people already follow them, but this wall serves as a reminder. We want everyone to have fun and enjoy, but we also want you to be challenged to work hard when you’re here. Our time is valuable and when we’re in the gym, it’s best spent focused on getting better. Appreciate everyone who continues to abide by these rules, and they’re enforced starting next week going forward. More to come from Kru Joe about this!
