Great quote from one of our Great Expectations CDF Freedom School Newark parents. Puts all of the work in context.

"When I picked J up on Friday, he and I were hesitant to leave. The atmosphere of Newark's Freedom School is vibrant and the positive energy is contagious; it is filled with brotherly love. I watched my little boy give strong hand shakes ,exchange hugs and phone numbers ,he even tried to bring a few other scholars home with us for the weekend (I'll contact their parents to see if we can make it happen in the near future). On the ride home, he sadly told me that he wish he could be in two places at once,he explained how the staff caused him to choke up several times that day (at least 5) with their kind words and special attention; he was so emotional that he turned down a stop at his favorite drive-thru. When we got home, he let it all out, he cried himself to sleep.

This morning,he was excited about starting 6th grade, but Great Expectations was still on his brain. He wondered if they were learning to make omelets without him, he said he really wanted to surprise me with breakfast one day and now it will probably just be cereal and toast. He realizes that he is a part of something greater and I believe that in 10 to 20 years from now he will really know the impact that was made on his life. Prior to his enrollment, positive, prominent and productive black men were just icons from the media or short passages in his history books; having the opportunity to see and talk to successful black men, make it normal and obtainable for him.

"We Love our Freedom School" and we are eternally grateful to everyone involved.

p.s. Omar Davis always appears enthusiastic,he makes his job look fun and easy but I know that leading a group of black boys from Newark can't be easy. Good job good job,Good job good job,G-O-O-D J-O-B,Good job good job!"
