Some good advice and a great life lesson from one of our most celebrated actors

I saw this on Instagram and it’s just too good not to share. I love a good story or analogy that doesn’t apply to me directly (in this case, I’m not an actor) but applies to my job as a leader. Tom Hanks shares the best advice he’s ever received. And I gotta tell ya… this ✨absolutely✨ ...

Another 5 star review!
If your organization's training is designed as a "one n done" you are taking a huge risk. Effective training, delivered consistently, is so much more than simply teaching the job tasks.
Providing continuing training leads to continued excellence in delivering an outstanding experience. This is true for your external clients, but, is also true for your own team, your "internal clients", as well.
It's not enough for everyone to receive great technical training on the mechanics of their job, they also must internalize the passion for excellence in the delivery of the experience. An organization that provides ongoing training for the full team is an organization that knows that the ENTIRE team is focused on delivering consistent excellence in their outcomes.

Choices
This past week I was hiking in Michigan when I came to a branching of the trail. It was a moment that called for a choice.
As I looked at the two options I noted that the trail going to the left appeared bright and sunny and looked to have had more use. The trail that went to the right was shadowed and dark. The path seemed a bit less used. Simply on appearance my first thought was that clearly following the left hand trail was the direction taken more often. The choice looked easy.
I then looked at the trail marker.
Going to the left was designated as the Advanced Trail. Going to the right was designated as an Easy Trail.
Now which was the better choice? To determine that I had to know what my objective was. Journey or destination.
Looking at the choice of trails before me I knew that either choice would ultimately get me to my goal (the car). I knew that the left trail was longer, required more effort, more time, but offered additional rewards by way of a scenic overlook. The trail on the right was easier, far less strenuous, and would get me back to the car much quicker.
Which is the better choice?
I am a person who is more focused on the journey, less on reaching a specific destination. I will choose the experience, no matter how taxing, over the convenience of reaching the goal with the least amount of effort. Advanced Trail is my choice. Normally.
But not on this hike. This time that was not the best choice.
This time I needed to honor my commitments to others and get back to the cottage. On this hike I could not choose to prioritize the experience of the journey over choosing the quickest path. A very small part of me may regret that I didn’t get to walk that path, but I don’t regret the choice.
Our choices are not good or bad if taken out of context. Bad choices are those that do not lead us where we want to go. Good choices are the ones that have been made knowing what the objective is.
