Long a dream, it's now real: a fast and accurate TB test that doesn't need phlegm 05/27/2026

โ€œWhat? No sputum needed?โ€ A recent NPR story highlights emerging tongue swab testing approaches for tuberculosis. These non-invasive sampling methods may help expand access to TB diagnostics and simplify testing in a variety of clinical and community settings.

Long a dream, it's now real: a fast and accurate TB test that doesn't need phlegm TB tests use phlegm โ€” not the easiest thing to get or work with. It takes time for results. And there can be false negatives and positives. A new test is more accurate and takes less than half an hour.

Genetic ancestry proportion influences risk of adverse events from tuberculosis treatment in Brazil 05/25/2026

Did you know that genetic ancestry may influence adverse reactions to TB medications? A recent publication from the RePORT Brazil consortium examines how genetic diversity within highly heterogeneous populations can contribute to variability in treatment responses and medication-related side effects.

โ€œIn primary healthcare settings, pooled testing is a method that should be encouraged in low-income settings like oursโ€ฆ itโ€™s economical and helps to screen more people with the same resources.โ€ โ€” Cameroon KII1, Programme Director.

The Start4All Pooled Testing Toolkit provides practical open-access resources to support National TB Programmes and implementation partners in planning, evaluating, and scaling up pooled sputum testing for TB. Resources include standard operating procedures, checklists, case studies, and instructional videos to support safe and effective implementation.
