While COVID-19 kept the Methods in Historic Preservation Class out of UD's Archaeology Lab, we still had the pleasure of learning about the overlap between historical archaeology and historic preservation from Professor Lu Ann De Cunzo over Zoom today! We got to discuss the overlaps in the two fields, the need to remove the silos that keep us apart, and some of Professor De Cunzo's recent projects.

This week the students in the "Methods in Historic Preservation" (UAPP 430/630) got out of the classroom and into the field to study the William Kennedy House and Store in McClellandville, north of Newark. Currently, the building is under renovation, so the students got to put their "building archaeology" hats on and "read" the building for signs of material change. The building presented many mysteries--the students did a great job of finding "ghosts" (missing material fabric), and changed material fabric! We had a great on-site discussion about hew marks, up-and-down saw marks, as well as circular saw marks. They got to see all these techniques in person--as well as discuss the periodization of the different technologies. The structural framing members are all hewn, the studs and joists in the dwelling are all up-and-down sawn, and the studs and the joists in the store are all circular sawn! It is always fun to take the classroom on the road, and it was a beautiful day too!

🚐 Field trip!! Theory & Practice students visited 3 sites in southern NJ today: Finn's Point National Cemetery, the Abel & Mary Nicholson House (w/ Ralph Harvard), and Marshalltown (w/ Janet Sheridan). Finn's Point is the burial site for nearly 2,500 Confederate soldiers from the Civil War prisoner camp on Pea Patch Island/Fort Delaware. The Nicholson House is a pattern-brick house built in 1722--a National Historic Landmark with incredible integrity. Marshalltown is a mostly-abandoned African American village dating to the early 19th century. All three sites face issues with sea-level rise, as well as underutilization/under-interpretation. Much to discuss next class!

Yesterday, our students in the Vernacular Architecture class (UAPP654) visited an amazing mid-century Prairie/Contemporary style dwelling in north Wilmington. The owner guided the students around, while they contemplated how this dwelling fits into the field of Vernacular Architecture. Thanks Larry for hosting us!

Two fantastic guest lectures today in Theory & Practice! First, Wade Catts talked about archaeology and its relationship to historic preservation, showing many Delaware projects. After break, Professor Chandra Reedy lectured about intangible cultural heritage--with lots of interesting examples from her work in Japan and China. Thanks to both for great presentations today!

100 years ago today (June 4, 1919), the 19th amendment was passed by Congress, allowing women the right to vote. It would take an additional 14 months to ratify the amendment (August 18, 1920), with Tennessee being the 36th state to do so. Inspired by the Maryland Historical Trust's own work on the topic, HP grad certificate student Kimberley Showell created this GIS story map identifying key sites of women's suffrage in the state of Delaware for an independent study. The project as initially conceived hoped to nominate a site in Delaware to the National Register, as currently no sites recognize this important historical event. However, very little material fabric survives on the landscape. Therefore, this map provides a critical digital preservation tool to recognize these important historical actors and events.
