A first-of-its-kind camp helping young people with spinal cord injuries reclaim independence.

True Grit is a residential program run by Rutgers SHP that helps teens and young adults rebuild confidence, community, and independence as they transition to adulthood after spinal cord injury.

For 25 years, Rutgers SHP has helped change how inpatient mental health care is delivered in New Jersey.

A Rutgers SHP team has worked inside state psychiatric hospitals to replace outdated custodial care with recovery-oriented, evidence-based psychiatric rehabilitation. Their free inpatient psych rehab trainings have now been viewed more than 250,000 times since 2021.

In January 2025, Rutgers SHP expanded its pro bono clinic network to include mental health.

The new mental health clinic helps close a major gap in continuity of care—offering individual and group counseling through telehealth and in-person services, while preparing students to deliver compassionate, coordinated care in the communities that need it most.

At Rutgers School of Health Professions, we tested a faster, more participatory approach to strategic planning and found that speed and buy-in do not have to be at odds.

Rutgers SHP research helped change veterans’ health policy.

Working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, SHP’s Scott Parrott and team built evidence linking burn pit exposure to serious disease—work that helped push forward the 2022 PACT Act and expand health benefits for veterans.
