πŸ“šπŸ§  DYSLEXIA & READING DIFFICULTIES: RESOURCES FOR PARENTS & EDUCATORS

When a child struggles to read, figuring out where to start can be overwhelming.

Dyslexia is not a lack of intelligence, motivation, effort, or exposure to books. And when a child continues to struggle with reading, β€œjust read more” is not an intervention.

Fortunately, we know a tremendous amount about how the brain learns to readβ€”and there are some AMAZING resources available to families and educators. β€οΈπŸ“–

πŸ“– A FEW BOOKS WORTH READING

β€’ Overcoming Dyslexia β€” Dr. Sally Shaywitz
β€’ Speech to Print β€” Dr. Louisa Moats
β€’ Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties β€” Dr. David Kilpatrick
β€’ Proust and the Squid β€” Dr. Maryanne Wolf

🚩 And perhaps one of the most important things parents need to hear:

You do not have to simply β€œwait and see.”

Persistent difficulty with phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, reading fluency, or learning and remembering sound-symbol relationships deserves attention.

Early identification matters.
Early intervention matters.
And the TYPE of instruction matters.

Look for instruction grounded in Structured Literacyβ€”explicit, systematic, cumulative teaching of the sound system of language, phonics, syllable patterns, morphology, spelling, vocabulary, syntax, and the structures that support fluent reading and comprehension.

🧠 Our struggling readers don’t need less challenging ideas.

❀️ They need better access to the written word.

πŸ“Œ SAVE this post.
❀️ SHARE it with another parent.
🍎 SEND it to a teacher.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can give a family is simply knowing where to start.
