🌳 Before a tree goes in the ground, there’s work happening beneath the surface.

UVSO Tree Coordinator Glenn Ferguson joined Bilal Lewis of the Newark Department of Water and Sewer City of Newark Water to inspect a potential future mass tree-planting location across from Vailsburg Park Vailsburg Park Community Conservancy Essex County Park System.

Successful urban forestry requires more than identifying where we want trees. We also have to understand what’s underground.

During today’s inspection, the team identified a water line running through an area being considered for planting. That information helps us plan around existing infrastructure, identify safer planting locations, and prepare for future excavation.

It’s also a great example of why strong working relationships across Newark matter to the Tree Canopy Initiative. Coordination with the people who understand our underground infrastructure helps us do this work responsibly and safely.

And a special shoutout to Bilal Lewis. With the department working through limited staffing, Bilal has continued to make himself available and has been a tremendous help to our team. We appreciate the partnership!

Ready to earn while you learn and help build a greener Newark?

Unified Vailsburg Services Organization (UVSO), as part of the City of Newark, NJ - City Hall Newark Tree Canopy Initiative, is recruiting 15 Urban Forester Trainees!

💰 $35/hour
🌱 No prior forestry experience required
🎓 Paid urban forestry & tree biology training
🛠️ Hands-on tree planting and field experience
⏱️ Approximately 60–80 paid hours
🌳 Build skills for potential green-industry career opportunities

WHO CAN APPLY?
📍 Newark residents
🎓 High school diploma or GED
💪 Able to perform physical/outdoor work and lift 40 lbs.
🚗 Reliable transportation
📅 Able to commit to required September–October training and field dates

🚛🧹 Service in action.

This is what community commitment looks like.

Today in Newark’s West Ward HoodaVille neighborhood, around 15th Street and 16th Avenue, we spotted dedicated partners working together to make a difference. Shout out to Officer Frye of the Newark Police 4th Precinct Community Service Unit Newark NJ Dept. Public Safety, Greater Newark Conservancy Greater Newark Conservancy, and Keep Newark Beautiful Keep Newark Beautiful as they spent their district day conducting a neighborhood clean-up, wellness checks, and supporting the local community food pantry.

Real neighborhood change happens when public servants, nonprofits, and residents work side by side. Every bag of litter collected, every conversation with a neighbor, and every pantry shelf stocked is another investment in a stronger, healthier Newark.

Thank you to everyone who continues to show up—not because they have to, but because they care. Together, we’re building cleaner blocks, safer streets, and stronger communities. 💚🤝

📚 UVSO was proud to participate in the City of Newark’s City of Newark, NJ - City Hall Reading Under the Stars initiative alongside so many organizations committed to literacy, family engagement, and youth development.

Representing UVSO were our Executive Director, Palm Street Site Director, and Smith Street Site Director, who made the most of the time available by connecting with families, engaging community partners, and supporting the event before the rain arrived. 🌟

Rain may have shortened the program, but it didn’t stop the commitment to our children and community. We look forward to supporting future opportunities that encourage a love of reading and lifelong learning.

Thank you to the City of Newark and all of the partners who continue investing in Newark’s youth. ❤️
