🌡️ Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

As temperatures continue to rise, New Directions Early Head Start encourages all families to take extra precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones from heat-related illness.

Heat Safety Tips:
💧 Drink water frequently, even if you don't feel thirsty.
🏠 Stay in an air-conditioned location whenever possible.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
☀️ Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
🤝 Check on family members, neighbors, and friends—especially older adults and those without access to air conditioning.

Cooling Centers Available

The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) has opened cooling centers on **Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.** These locations provide a safe, air-conditioned environment for anyone who needs relief from the heat.

Sixty-one years ago, a bold idea took root: every child — no matter their zip code or family income — deserves a strong start in life. What began as an 8-week summer program in 1965 has since served more than 38 million children and counting.

Today, Head Start programs across all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories continue that promise every single day — offering early education, health screenings, nutritious meals, and deep family support.
