Why did the noblewomen of ancient Egypt unconsciously cut their hands with sharp knives without feeling any physical pain? In Surah Yusuf (Verse 31), the Holy Quran documents one of the most astonishing historical scenes ever recorded: the royal banquet orchestrated by the wife of Al-Aziz (Potiphar's wife).
"And she gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], 'Come out before them.' And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, 'Perfect is Allah! This is not a man; this is none other than a noble angel.'" (Quran 12:31)
After facing relentless palace gossip and slander regarding her attraction toward Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him), she devised an unforgettable trap to demonstrate his otherworldly, God-given beauty, majesty, and dignity. When Prophet Yusuf (AS) walked into the banquet hall, the guests were so utterly captivated by his celestial presence (Malakun Kareem) that their knives severed their own flesh while peeling fruit—completely oblivious to the injury until after he passed.
This episode explores the theological and historical implications of Surah Yusuf Verse 31, detailing the prophetic tests of chastity, divine grace, and the societal corruption of the Egyptian aristocracy.
