Today marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year 5787! 🍎🍯 On this occasion, we take a look at local history and travel back in time to Oświęcim nearly a century ago. In 1929 (year 5690 in the Hebrew calendar), Rosh Hashanah eve fell on October 4. An extraordinary trace of the daily lives of the town's former residents has survived from that period. During renovation work in the Jewish Museum building at 5 Księdza Jana Skarbka Square, a greeting card with blessings for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) was discovered. Its author, Mordechai Neumark, together with his wife, ran a painting supply store in Oświęcim at 1 Kościelna Street. The card features traditional wishes written in Hebrew:

“With G-d's help, Erev Rosh Hashanah, 1929,
A blessing for a good year. May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for the New Year and sealed on Yom Kippur.
From Mordechai Neumark and wife, Oświęcim.”

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Wanda Traczyk-Stawska – a Home Army soldier, Warsaw Uprising veteran, and tireless guardian of the memory of its soldiers and civilian victims.

In 2023, participants of the American Service Academies Program (ASAP) had the extraordinary privilege of meeting Ms. Traczyk-Stawska at the Warsaw Insurgents Cemetery and hearing her testimony firsthand. That encounter will remain an important part of our program’s history.

We are deeply grateful for the courage, testimony, and memory she shared with generations to come.

May her memory be honored.

Yesterday, we had the great pleasure of welcoming the new Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kraków, Mr Marc Eichhorn. Accompanied by Dr Artur Szyndler, the Consul General visited the Jewish Museum and the historic Synagogue. We also had time for coffee at Café Bergson and a conversation about our plans for future cooperation. The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kraków has been a valued and trusted partner of our Museum for many years, supporting our educational and remembrance projects. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to meet yesterday and thank the Consul General for his visit and for our continued cooperation!

We are pleased to share USMMA’s reflections on the third year of the American Service Academy Program (ASAP) for Midshipmen of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

We are grateful to USMMA, Dr. Michael Melcer, Captain Patrick Keane, and this year’s Midshipmen for their thoughtful engagement and commitment throughout the program.

We value this growing partnership and look forward to continuing our collaboration in the years ahead.

Did you know that a bottle and label from Jakób Haberfeld’s factory in Oświęcim, presented in our exhibition, are also on display at the Imperial War Museum in London? This is a remarkable example of how objects connected to the history of Oświęcim can continue to tell the story of the past in other places around the world. We would like to sincerely thank Barbara Posner from Sweden for sharing this photo and this interesting fact with us!

Last Monday, we were delighted to welcome Mr. Marcin Płużek from Bielsko-Biała, who donated a remarkable photograph of the interior of the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot Synagogue, taken in 2000, before its reopening and restoration.

We are deeply grateful for this thoughtful gift and for enriching our collection with another valuable addition documenting the synagogue’s history. ❤️

Yesterday hosted a group of educators from the Yad Vashem Institute. Guided by our educator, Kamil Gut, the group visited the Museum, the Synagogue, the town of Oświęcim, and the Jewish cemetery. Our guests were deeply moved and impressed not only by the Museum itself, but also by the rich history of the town and the reflective atmosphere of the cemetery.

This visit was a milestone moment, marking the conclusion of their two-week study tour in Poland. The entire program was organized with the support of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, led by the Center's educator, Justyna Korpak.

Recently, we had the honor of hosting a very special guest. We were visited by Deborah Lipstadt, the prominent historian and US Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism.

During her visit, our guest dedicated her time to touring the Synagogue and our permanent exhibition. We are deeply grateful for this visit, which was a highly significant event for us.

We sincerely thank her for this inspiring visit.

The ninth edition of the seminar “History – an Impulse for Action for the Future" has come to an end. It took place in Oświęcim from 29 June to 2 July 2026.
Over several intensive days, teachers, educators, museum professionals and social activists deepened their knowledge of Holocaust history, antisemitism, prejudice, stereotypes and exclusion.

The programme included lectures, methodological workshops, work with survivor testimonies, a study visit to the Auschwitz Memorial, and planning of local educational initiatives. A key part of the seminar was reflection on how to teach about the past responsibly and how to turn historical knowledge into actions supporting human rights, democracy and civic engagement.
We would like to thank all participants for their presence, openness and commitment.

The seminar was organized by TOLI – The Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights, in cooperation with the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation and the Zachor Foundation.
