Only one more month until our application deadline! Our programs in art education show artists how to teach students to think critically and question the world around them through art and visual imagery. Our Literacy Through Art Education course takes our Art Ed students all around New York City to see current museum and gallery exhibitions to learn how visual imagery can be a language for expression and interpreted by the viewer. Email us at [email protected] to hear more about getting a graduate degree in art education at SVA!

In our Materials and Processes course, students learned different hand building techniques for the elementary classroom with self drying clay to design and create ceramic mugs. The mugs were paired with a written note intended as a gift to be presented to the individual the artwork is in honor of. Mugs were made in honor of people such as Sylvia Plath, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Chow, and a student's father who is a musician.
It's that time of the year again!!

Alumni spotlight: MAT '22 and her arts-based thesis piece, "Pepper Spray Blanket" were selected for the SVA Flatiron Gallery's exhibition of Graduate alumni art, "Bold Outlines: Celebrating SVA's Graduate Programs." All MA/MAT Art Education students create a thesis artwork investigating their own interests in art and creativity with a supporting paper contributing to its significance in education. We are so proud of Annabella's final thesis piece continuing to live on beyond her final thesis presentation and its valuable message in expressing the female experience through craft. The show will be up until November 27th. Congratulations Annabella! 🥳

Just in time for the spooky season, students in our Literacy through Art Education course listened to the great poem "Jabberwocky" poem and created their own versions of the famous literary creature. Check them out!

Happy National Arts in Education Week! This week was designated in 2010 by Congress to celebrate the arts as an essential part of education in the home, school, and community. To honor this week, we have included some resources for the arts.
1. is New York City's creative reuse center supporting the upcycling of materials, the arts, and education. These items are free of charge available to schools and other organizations all over the five boroughs.
2. open access collection is a database consisting of over 492,000 public domain images and artworks available for free and unrestricted use.
3. has available workshops to support art educators in professional development, including this week's seminar in advocating for Federal and State Arts Education Policy. All webinars are recorded so art educators can register and watch after the event date to view it at their leisure.
4. a space tucked away in the Chelsea district where artists pay a flat rate of $20 and can stay in the space all day to cozy up with their friends to create artwork or chat over tea. You can use the available art library for an additional $15 or join the space for a class. Meet new people and make art in a place away from home.
5. is the New York State Art Teachers Association. Join one of the 10 regions your district falls under and be a part of a community that is built on sharing experiences with other art educators, developing professionally, and artistic opportunities for teachers and students.
6. is hosting a series of resources on arts in education, including a free social media toolkit for amplifying the importance of arts in education, videos and podcasts to empower art educators, and more!
We're back from the summer! Our new cohort is here, and they're ready to have a good time. Immediately taken aback by the view at SVA'S Chelsea Gallery, they were able to snap the annual orientation photo before anyone else joined on the balcony at the reception. 🥳🪱
Congratulations to the graduates of the MA/MAT department at SVA!! You are no longer our students, but we hope you will always come back to see us and tell us about your students to come. 🌿🌳
