This holiday season, please consider donating to the Literacy Assistance Center (https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/LiteracyAssistanceCent…). In 2018, the LAC provided professional development and instructional coaching to over 500 adult literacy educators in NYC (and to hundreds more through presentations we offered across the country); graduated 38 adult ESOL teachers from our Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults certificate program; expanded our support for the more than 150 adult literacy programs throughout NYS that use our data management system; leveraged our Investing in Quality report to enhance our work with program leaders -- and to advocate for greater investment in adult literacy services. And, this fall, we launched the Literacy and Justice Initiative, a new project designed to build a broad-based movement for adult literacy education by framing adult literacy as part of wider movements for social and economic justice, including the immigrants’ rights and workers’ rights movements. For more information on any of our work, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support!

Tell Governor Cuomo & NY Legislators: Fund Community-Led Efforts to Get Out the Count for Census 2020! 11/20/2018

Yesterday morning, New York Counts 2020 had an impressive showing of support from more than 25 New York Counts 2020 organizational members, launched its campaign for state funding of census work, particularly of community-based organizations' efforts to get out the count (BOTC) in 2020. Thanks to ALL who came out.

Backed by the findings of Fiscal Policy Institute's Report, we are asking the state to appropriate at least $40 million ($2.00 per New York resident) for community based organizations to do the critical outreach necessary to maximize a complete count in New York State. We need each member organization of New York Counts 2020 to please circulate widely this online petition, bit.ly/fundcensus to your members, friends, and colleagues living in New York State to sign.

When we go to Albany for Lobby Day on March 5, 2019, the petition will show legislators how widespread support for funding of community based organizations is – and how critically important they are to get out the count in 2020. An accurate and complete count impacts ALL New Yorkers! Thanks to everyone for your anticipated action in making this campaign a success!!

Tell Governor Cuomo & NY Legislators: Fund Community-Led Efforts to Get Out the Count for Census 2020! The New York State Legislature will soon engage in budget negotiations for FY 2019-2020. Census data decides how much of the $800 billion dollars in federal funding New Yorkers will receive for the next ten years, the number of seats New York has in the House of Representatives, and redistricting fo...

2018 Adult Literacy & Education Advocacy Day 03/06/2018

Thank you Ron Kim for New York!

More than 3.5 million New Yorkers need access to adult literacy programs and this year, due to federal cuts, we are facing an estimated $8million funding gap, leaving 17,000 more students behind in NY.

Immigrants who are English language proficient earn up to 24% more than immigrants who are not.

For every NYC resident who earns a high school diploma or its equivalent, there is a net benefit to the City of $324,000 over their lifetime (tax contributions and decreased public benefit utilization).

We need to restore and support additional funding ($15.3m total) in this year's budget!

Investing in Quality 01/16/2018

The LAC is pleased to release Investing in Quality: A Blueprint for Adult Literacy Programs and Funders. Funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, the report details 14 "Building Blocks" of a comprehensive, community-based adult literacy program, identifies the resources needed to fully implement the Building Blocks, and includes a first-of-its-kind cost model. The LAC plans to use this report as part of our technical assistance to the field, as well as to advocate for increased funding rates for programs.

This holiday season, please consider making a gift to the Literacy Assistance Center (https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/LiteracyAssistanceCenter). Over this past year, activists from the communities directly targeted by the Trump administration have been at the forefront of the fight to preserve our civil rights, civil liberties, social safety net, and vision of ourselves as a nation of immigrants. Yet today in New York City, there are more than two million adults from these same communities who lack the English language or literacy skills necessary to make their voices fully heard. For over 30 years, the LAC has been working to strengthen the adult education system, and to advance adult literacy as a foundation for equal opportunity, civic engagement, and social justice. Thank you all very much for your support!
