On July 1, Suriname celebrated Keti Koti — Broken Chains

Long before emancipation was declared, thousands of enslaved Africans escaped into Suriname's dense rainforest.

They became known as the Maroons—communities that fought for freedom and built independent societies beyond colonial control.

Today, they are the best example of preserved African culture in the Americas!
