The K1 Project, Center for Nuclear Studies at Columbia University, aims to engage the public in an informed dialogue regarding nuclear technologies.
Nuclear technologies have been the source of interest, innovation, and conflict since their development in the 20th century. Despite the saliency of the nuclear related issues, there has been a lack of informed debate on the subject in the public sphere. Over the last couple of weeks, our students and board of directors have attended meetings and events of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, whose work focuses on disarmament and international security. The events have been a fascinating learning experience for all of us. We are eager to continue our collaboration with the UN Office of Disarmament to increase education efforts and engagement of the youth on these topics.

Our Founding Director and Assistant Director got to meet Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) last Sunday at the Evening for Peace Gala organized by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize and Dr. Rouco was able to hold it!

Our super scuba diving team (including Gemma from Barnard College) was in the Marshall Islands in August to investigate radiological conditions in the Bravo nuclear bomb crater, at Bikini Atoll. Cores are safely back in our lab!
