Learning tabla is often a personal journey. You practice alone, grow on your own, and spend countless hours refining your craft. But being part of a community makes all the difference.

At NYC Tabla, our community recitals bring students together from different backgrounds and locations, creating a shared sense of purpose and belonging. When you see others working toward the same goals, learning becomes more inspiring and rewarding.

Hear from Ashwin, one of our newer community members, as he shares his experience of finding connection through tabla.

We started our Manhattan group classes today. Few new students joined and we revisited the basics. Thanks to Instagram for spreading the words. Looking forward to a rhythmic summer! 🌞 there’s still time to join our growing community

Ashwin is a multi percussionist, primarily focused on mallet percussion and drum set, with roots across classical, jazz, and rock music. Having played multiple instruments through his journey, he recently started tabla at NYC Tabla with Mir. In a short time, he has already made a beautiful mark through his dedication, musical understanding, and playing. He also shared thoughtful reflections on the similarities and differences between Western music learning and tabla, along with the hurdles and discoveries from his own journey.

Meet Julia Santoli - singer, musician, and PhD researcher in ethnomusicology, who has now completed two semesters of tabla classes with us.

Widely respected in the experimental music scene, Julia shares her thoughts on how learning tabla has added a new dimension to her musical and personal journey.

Grateful to hear her perspective, reflections, and experiences from the classroom.

Stay tuned as we share more moments from the interview here on the page.

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes it feels impossible, but if you challenge yourself and stay patient, things begin to happen.

A lot of the students who joined in January stepped up and shared a recital in front of 50–60 people last Saturday at Gibney Dance studios. That’s a beautiful achievement, and we’re excited to keep growing our tabla family this summer.

Every big musical journey begins with a small step. Proud of all the students at NYCTabla for trusting the process, practicing together, and stepping onto the stage with confidence. For many, this was their very first real concert experience — live musicians, quick soundcheck, and a room full of people listening. Looking forward to seeing this small seed grow into a lifelong tree of music. 🌱🥁
