In our classes, and really in learning any language, we start with the basics. First, you learn individual letters or sounds. Then those sounds become words, and words come together to form sentences. Tabla works in much the same way.

As you learn more and more musical “sentences,” one day you realize you can create your own sentences, tell your own stories, and even create your own poetry through rhythm.

This idea of phraseology was introduced to me by one of my gurus, Pandit Suresh Talwalkarji. Some of the basic practices I learned from him during my talim had a profound impact on me, and I continue to share the same concepts with my students.

Here’s a small snippet from one of our classes. I play a phrase first, and then ask everyone to play it back. That’s how they begin to understand how it’s supposed to sound.

That is the way we teach at NYC Tabla.

Sometimes a kid may have an interest in tabla, and sometimes they may not. But learning an instrument, or learning anything at a young age, takes time. Performing arts can help build confidence, but a child may not always be ready for that moment, and that is completely okay.

This kid came to my class and was a bit shy at first. But over time, he opened up to me and to all the other students. Eventually, he even felt comfortable performing in front of people.

It has been really beautiful to see his journey and to hear a little bit of his parent’s reflection on how he has grown along the way.

Teaching a kid is challenging. Understanding their psychology is even more important. And learning an instrument? That’s not easy at all.

The right modulation in the bol(tabla syllables) is everything.

You can know the bols. You can know the variations. You can know the compositions. But if the modulation is wrong, it won’t sound authentic.

It’s like asking someone, “How are you?” The words are the same, but depending on the intonation, the meaning can change entirely.

In tabla, the sound, touch, weight, and modulation of each bol are what give it its character.

That’s the difference between knowing a bol and truly understanding how it should speak.

Every performance is a milestone.

Recently, the NYC Tabla Ensemble performed at a community event, where some of my advanced students presented tabla solos while another student accompanied them on lehra. Playing lehra requires focus, sensitivity, and confidence. Performing in front of an audience makes it even more challenging.

With very little preparation time, they came together, supported one another, and delivered a flawless performance. I couldn’t be prouder of their growth.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does success. It is built one class, one practice session, and one performance at a time. Every small opportunity prepares you for the next one, and watching my students grow into confident musicians is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.

Learning tabla is like learning a new language. The earlier we begin, the more naturally the rhythm, coordination, and expression become part of us.

Kids have a beautiful ability to absorb new patterns, and watching them grow through the process is inspiring. One of my youngest students started with challenges in controlling his fingers and developing precision, but his determination has been remarkable. He keeps showing up, practicing, and catching up with students much older than him.

Even when he faces obstacles, his curiosity and dedication keep him moving forward. Slowly, he is finding his own voice, matching the energy, confidence, and spirit of his peers.

Starting early builds not just musical skills, but patience, discipline, and a lifelong connection with rhythm.
