Educators and administrators face significant challenges with more than 70% of teachers reporting a recent increase in disruptive behavior in the classroom (USA Today).
In addition to feeling underprepared to effectively manage classroom behavior, many teachers also face extreme stress and burnout, and administrators face rising absenteeism and teacher shortages.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that more than 80% of U.S. public schools say the pandemic has negatively impacted student behavior and socio-emotional development. USA Today reports that over 70% of educators in a recent national survey say students are misbehaving more now than before the pandemic.
This has driven an urgent need for for both teachers and administrators with a focus on understanding factors that impact:
โก๏ธ both student and adult social, emotional and behavior well-being
โก๏ธ how to create a positive classroom and school environment
โก๏ธ effective use of classroom management strategies

Educators report increasing classroom behavior challenges, and chronic absenteeism adds to those challenges. Students who missed at least 10% of the school year grew from 15% in 2018 to 28% in 2022, according to the American Enterprise Institute.
The problem is more acute in districts with low achievement and higher poverty, where about one-third of students were chronically absent.
Given the seriousness of these issues, multiple states across the country have enacted laws designed to:
โข support students' behavioral health
โข encourage more teacher training in behavior management
โข drive use of data-driven multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) for interventions
These new requirements pose challenges for many school districts that have limited resources and are contending with teacher shortages resulting from burnout and retirements.
However, there are district-wide evidence-based approaches to behavioral health that give educators the training and tools they need to maximize both student and teacher success: https://bit.ly/4fhqbNI
How can we empower teachers to effectively manage the rise in classroom behavior challenges? While professional development can have immense benefits for educators, often, it is not targeted toward practical applications, such as classroom management. High quality professional development can be the key to retaining educators and has been shown to affect their decision to stay in education or at their school (Hagaman & Casey, 2018).
In our blog, we cover eight helpful tips for teachers to improve their classroom management skills: https://bit.ly/3Wo0yTV

RethinkEd Launches New Solutions to Address Rise in Classroom Behavior Challenges /PRNewswire/ -- RethinkEd, a pioneering EdTech platform powering the potential of educators and students from RethinkFirst, today announced two new solutions...
Classroom disruptions, behavior management issues, and absenteeism are on the rise in American education, leaving teachers with less time to do what they love โ teach. According to EdWeek Research Center, more than 70% of teachers have reported an increase in disruptive classroom behavior, up from 66% prior to the pandemic.
To help educators address these issues, we have announced two new solutions aimed at addressing the increase in student behavior-related challenges that are impacting time spent on classroom instruction and hampering efforts to retain teachers.
The RethinkEd Behavior Suite and Professional Development (PD) Behavior Training Series offer a comprehensive evidence-based solution that provides school districts and teachers behavior management training tools and support designed to achieve better student outcomes and improved teacher efficacy and job satisfaction.
โDisruptive behaviors, chronic absenteeism and low student morale have become too commonplace in Americaโs classrooms, particularly since students returned to in-person learning after the pandemic. Juggling these new challenges have left teachers frustrated, with many leaving the profession they loved because of stress and burnout,โ said Diana Frezza, general manager and executive vice president of RethinkEd.
โOur Behavior Suite and PD training provides school districts and teachers a complete solution to tackle this problem head on. Data-based decision making and targeted interventions, combined with training on behavior skills that promote their success, offer a holistic approach to address the needs of students and teachers alike.โ

Bullying. Tantrums. Emotional outbursts.
Behavioral challenges in the classroom are rising in frequency and severity but only about a third of teachers are effectively trained to manage them.
This is partially due to a lack of coursework and training in college programs for teachers. According to the National Council on Teacher Quality, only 15% of teacher special education programs provide sufficient coursework on classroom management and only about 33% of programs require teacher candidates to practice these skills.
Increasingly, this is leading to burnout for teachers, and lower outcomes for students.
But thereโs hope.
High quality professional development that builds classroom and behavior management skills alongside tools for emotional wellness and mental health can create a safer, more positive classroom environment โ for teachers and students.
To get started, here are 8 simple strategies for successful behavior management. Enjoy and feel free to share with someone who needs to hear them.
