In Loving Memory of David Smith

It is with a heavy heart that we remember David Smith, affectionately known to many as "The Analyzer." David was a community pillar whose life was dedicated to creating a safe haven and fostering a sense of family through the St. Nicholas Chess & Backgammon Club. David, a former cop, opened the club in 2011 when many local chess players faced harassment and arrest. He provided a sanctuary for chess and backgammon enthusiasts, turning a passion into a mission.

David resembled his mother in many ways; like her, he was a nurturing presence in the community. An entrepreneur at heart, he used his vending machines to support the club, ensuring it remained a place where young minds could learn the art and strategy of chess. His vision transformed the club into a nonprofit, allowing local chess legends to impart their wisdom to the youth. David also extended his help beyond the chessboard, aiding individuals involved in car accidents by connecting them with lawyers.

Known for his keen analytical skills, David earned the nickname "The Analyzer" for his insightful postmortem analyses of chess games. His commentary was educational and a testament to his deep understanding and love for the game. The club saw many great matches, including epic encounters between Hans Niemann and Yaacov Norowitz and the legendary 2018 match between Jerald Times and Thomas Murphy, a battle for bragging rights in the Black chess world.

David's impact on the community was profound. His club was a gathering place for park legends like "Sammy," "Poe," "Clayton," and Steve Colding, as well as Blackbear School legend William Morrison. It nurtured rising stars in backgammon like Brian Marshall, also known as "Beezo," and Lemont Haskins, who later won the intermediate section in the Backgammon World Championships in Monte Carlo in 2022. Lemont, a Yoruba priest known as The Babalawo of Harlem, performed remembrance services for departed chess players, a tradition that will undoubtedly continue in David's honor.

World-class backgammon legend Antoinette-Marie Williams also graced the club, occasionally organizing tournaments. David's club was a vibrant hub where people from different generations, genders, social classes, and even international backgrounds met to share their love for games and connect.

David is survived by his younger brother Darryl, a City bus driver, and countless friends and admirers. His legacy lives on through the club he built and the lives he touched. As an ancestor now, David's spirit continues to guide us, both on and off the board.

David Smith, your presence will be sorely missed, but your impact and legacy will endure forever. Rest in peace, dear friend.

I COACHED THE HOWARD UNIVERSITY CHESS TEAM AT THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES 2023

This past week I had the fantastic opportunity to travel to the Pan American Games in Seattle, Washington with the Howard University (HU) Chess Team as their Coach.

In 2022 the HU team placed 47 out of 50 teams in the U/1800 division; this year (2023), they tied for 7th, moving up 40 places.

A special shoutout goes to Tani Adewumi, who conducted the training sessions with me. And, of course, congratulations to the HU student body for an excellent performance while leading the way for other HBCUs to develop the beautiful game and participate in flagship events.

Please stay tuned for future postings as I document my five-day journey.

Jerald Times,
