The Jewish educational world has lost a giant; a visionary in every sense of the word. Before I met Dr. Harlene Winnick Appelman, I was intimidated by her. She was the Executive Director of The Covenant Foundation and set a very high bar for Jewish educators everywhere. Getting to know Harlene in person, however, was a completely different story. This powerhouse of a woman listened more than she talked; she was a collaborator and a mentor; she was an insightful thought partner. She explained that when projects don't go as planned, it means we're doing something right. If everything works, we're not pushing the limits of what already exists. My favorite memory of Harlene, though, was Shabbat dinner with her and Henry at their home in Ann Arbor. I was there for work, and she invited me without hesitation. It was then that I learned she really could do everything - she was the most amazing cook and baker, and her home was filled with love, laughter, stories, and such generosity of spirit. Those are memories I will always cherish. All of us at Matan send our deepest condolences to Harlene's family, colleagues and the entire Jewish community.
