PTA Saint Demetrios of Astoria Greek Afternoon School

What a day! Congratulations to our eighth grade graduates and our Pre-K and K students on their stepping up and graduation ceremonies!

Our M/W kids had such a fun time today watching this funny and entertaining Greek kids’ production!

This year, our PTA sponsored the production of another Greek children’s theatrical production titled, “JOURNEY TO FAIRYLAND” (ΤΑΞΙΔΙ ΣΤΗΝ ΠΑΡΑΜΥΘΟΧΩΡΑ), written by Ioanna Katsarou.

Our PTA paid for this production to be brought to the stage at the Hellenic Cultural Center, to be enjoyed not only by our students, but to be seen by other schools as well!

Congratulations to Ioannis Mammis and Maria Papaioannou for representing our afternoon school at the annual Greek American Homeowners association awards ceremony for Greek afternoon school honor students. These soon to be eighth grade graduates made us proud with their effortless Greek! Thank you to their eighth grade teachers Ms. Peggy Simakou and Ms. Kyriaki Aloizou, as well as to our principal, Ms. Aikaterini Renti, for all their help along the way ! ! Fun times learning about Cycladic art during our trip to the Metropolitan Museum today!

Today the PTA gave out books that were sent to us by Liana Denezaki, straight from Greece! Our Saturday group will be getting the same books this week, as well.

They are her gift to us, thanking our PTA for bringing her to our school back in February!

We hope that you all enjoy practicing your Greek while also learning about an important topic through these informative books!

Μετά από την πολύ τιμητική πρόσκληση που είχα από το Saint Demetrios Greek Afternoon School της Νέας Υόρκης, το υπέροχο ταξίδι και τη ζεστή φιλοξενία από δασκάλους, γονείς και παιδιά, τα πρώτα βιβλία που δημιουργήσαμε μαζί έφτασαν στη Νέα Υόρκη! Κατά τη διάρκεια των εργαστηρίων, τα παιδιά δημιούργησαν δικές τους ιστορίες, ήρωες και εικόνες μέσα από παιχνίδια φαντασίας, συνεργατική γραφή και συζήτηση μέσα στην τάξη. Επιστρέφοντας στην Ελλάδα, δούλεψα πάνω σε όλο αυτό το αυθεντικό υλικό, κρατώντας τις ιδέες, τις λέξεις, το χιούμορ και τη σκέψη των ίδιων των παιδιών ζωντανά, ώστε κάθε τάξη να αποκτήσει το δικό της μοναδικό βιβλίο. Και τώρα, τα πρώτα δείγματα βρίσκονται ήδη στα χέρια τους! Μικροί συγγραφείς, μικροί εικονογράφοι και μια σχολική κοινότητα που αγκαλιάζει τη δημιουργία με τρόπο πραγματικά ξεχωριστό. Θερμά συγχαρητήρια στην κ. Κατερίνα Ρέντη για την εκπαιδευτική επιμέλεια και τη διαρκή στήριξη αυτής της προσπάθειας, στους εκπαιδευτικούς του σχολείου, αλλά και στον Σύλλογο Γονέων του Saint Demetrios Greek Afternoon School, που πίστεψε από την πρώτη στιγμή σε αυτή τη δημιουργική διαδρομή.
