The incredible Kenny Drew Jr. would have been 66 today!
One of the greatest pianists of his generation, Drew worked alongside the likes of Johnny Griffin, Al Foster, Buster Williams, Bob Berg, George Mraz, and the Mingus Big Band in addition to recording numerous excellent albums as a bandleader and solo artist, including "A Look Inside" and "Kenny Drew Jr. at Maybeck"! Drew was also a prolific composer, having written outstanding compositions such as "A Look Inside", "Goodbye Mr. Jones", and "Farmer's Waltz"!

Stewart is also an accomplished bandleader and composer in his own right, having recorded over a dozen albums as a leader and having written outstanding compositions such as "Cyclops", "Manhattan Bridge", and "Systems"!

The legendary Grachan Moncur III would have been 87 today!
Undoubtedly one of the greatest trombonists and composers in the history of the music, Moncur worked alongside the likes of Jackie McLean, Wayne Shorter, Archie Shepp, Joe Henderson (Joe Henderson - Blue Note Records), and Ray Charles in addition to recording several classic albums as a leader, including "Evolution", "Some Other Stuff", and "Exploration", and writing numerous brilliant compositions such as "Thandiwa" and "Monk In Wonderland"!

18 years ago today, the great Wayne Escoffery recorded Booker Little's "Bee Vamp" live at SMOKE Jazz Club for his album "Veneration" for Savant Records (HighNote Records) alongside the outstanding band of Joe Locke, Hans Glawischnig, and Lewis Nash! A classic Little composition that alternates between brooding, surreal vamp sections and hard-driving, harmonically active passages, "Bee Vamp" is a perfect showcase for Escoffery's massive sound and fiery playing, and is an excellent addition to every musician's repertoire!

A lush and passionate ballad written by the legendary Clifford Brown (Clifford Brown - Verve Records), "LaRue" showcases Brown's unmistakable melodic and harmonic genius in tremendously inspired form, and while it was never recorded during his lifetime, it has been recorded by a number of incredible trumpeters over the years, including Kenny Dorham, Jason Palmer, and Jeremy Pelt (The Real Jeremy Pelt Fan Page)! This version, recorded by Dorham on May 27th, 1957, was the first.
