Lineage is often defined as a direct link or line from an ancestor or ancestry. Much like people, music can also be traced back in time to artists that in many ways are ancestors who have impacted and inspired music of today. This album acts as a line tracing jazz music over many years – past and present, encompassing original classic charts, contemporary music, old charts re-invented and new music representing the true arc, and thus lineage, of jazz music.

Today, we continue the lineage of New York Youth Symphony and in particular, NYYS Jazz as we officially release our debut jazz album, called Lineage. Today is for the students who played on the album; today is for our Michael Thomas, The Robert J. Levine Jazz Program Director and Band Manager Bell Thompson, who made it all happen; today is for all those that have supported us, from parents to trustees to audience members; today is for all those NYYS Jazz musicians and directors that came before now; today is for all those young Jazz musicians that will come after us.

Be a part of our Lineage.

As 2025 comes to an end, it is more important than ever for us to send a message to our young musicians. They need to know that, even though support for the arts has been dwindling, there is a widespread group of people that still believe in them and their future. So, thanks in advance for helping us send them message to them. No amount is too small or...too big :) Michael Thomas Andrew J.
