At minus 7°C, a Ukrainian family fleeing the war faced a heartbreaking choice: leave their 12-year-old German Shepherd behind—or carry her to safety. They chose to carry her.
Pulya was struggling to walk and repeatedly falling as the family made the final 17 kilometers toward the Polish border. The family had already traveled for hours and was carrying children and belongings, but they refused to abandon their elderly dog. One family member eventually carried Pulya when she could no longer manage the journey herself.
The story was reported in March 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced millions of people to flee. The family ultimately reached the border with Pulya still with them.
If you had to make that journey, would you carry your dog too? 🐕
