The great Cookie Stark is, sadly, now the late, great Cookie Stark. My dear friend transitioned during the night and is on to the next journey, whatever that may be. I hope she's reunited with her sisters and her beloved Kenneth, and I am forever grateful that she came into my life and became my dear, dear friend. So many wonderful, joyful, ribald stories I could share, but for now I'll just say I will miss her profoundly, as I know her family will, as well. What a journey she had. Here's. one of my favorite photos of her, from her last true cabaret, "This is 88," just before the pandemic. She did another full evening when she turned 90, but by 92 it was too much. May we all live such fulfilled lives. May we all send so much love out into the world. And for those who knew and loved her, may her memory be a blessing. Services are Monday, 19th at 11AM at Riverside Chapel for anyone who wants to come and pay their respects. I will post a couple of videos of her in the coming days. For now, I can only say "Rest in peace, dear one." You've earned it.

The worst Christmas I ever spent? I'm glad you asked. Christmas Eve 1986. I had just joined the circus as ringmaster for Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey (Circus)...They've since dumped Circus from the title. I had a small stipend to live on during rehearsals but I didn't know that in that organization, you negotiate real estate, not salary. So I lived in what they call a double stateroom formerly occupied by a monkey trainer. My only closet, literally, was a monkey cage. On Christmas Eve, we did our dress rehearsal and then those of us require to do so, trudged up to Kenneth Feld's office for a post-show meeting. By the time I came down to the arena, no one was there. Keep in mind, most of the crew and performers lived in Florida. By the time I realized I was stranded, all the execs had taken off, too. I trudged back to the train yard and my cubby of a room...Hey, there were people on the show who had way less space than I did so I'm not complaining..and the entire train yard was deserted. I had some Kraft Mac 'n Cheese and, around 10PM, I was so depressed that I gathered all the quarters I had and walked about a mile and a half to the nearest payphone to call my mom in LA. It didn't go well. Between chugging quarters into the phone and me being on the verge of tears the entire time, all I could think was that signing that contract was the worst decision of my life. But there was a Christmas miracle of sorts. Just as I ran out of quarters and hung up, our sound tech, Suzy, rolled up in her car and offered to take me to midnight mass in Sarasota. I hopped in and we drove in silence for about 30 minutes. But when I walked into that church, it was all worth it. I still have sense memory of every second. The candles, the scent of the wreathes, the congregation, the gorgeous alter...and ""O Holy Night." Taking the job MAY have been a horrible mistake. But moments like that always make me realize how grateful I am for the experience. Merry Christmas, everybody!

CHILI 07/31/2021

With just four weeks to go till I hit my 70th birthday and my little solo singing celebration, “Water Under the Bridge,” on MetroZoom, I’m honored to be able to share this piece which has just been released on Table Talks, the series created by PocketBear Productions.

As I approach this milestone, I’ve become deeply committed to learning more about myself and how I can better commit and contribute to the world around me. I think “A Man Eating a Bowl of Chili,” (which they’ve shortened to “Chili” for the release), written by Robert Moulthrop and directed by Anthony Caruso, is a great step in the right direction.

I’d be thrilled and honored if you, my friends, colleagues and family, would visit the YouTube link, watch the piece, like and comment and, even more importantly, share it with others.

I’m proud of the work and want more than anything for it to get the exposure I think it deserves. Thanks always to David Sitler for recommending me to the PocketBear team! Enjoy!
