The DreamYard Project

The DreamYard Project DreamYard uses the arts as a tool to improve teaching and learning & to build community. and The Public Theater.

As the largest arts learning provider in the Bronx, DY impacts the social and intellectual growth of thousands through safe, and creatively challenging programs. Through year-long residencies artists co-teach with classroom teachers for 90 minutes and plan curriculum for 45 minutes a week over 32 weeks from September to June; disciplines include theater, dance, visual art, film/video, music and cr

eative writing. DreamYard will provide 145 residencies to 30 partner schools in 2008-09. Bronx Writes, a yearlong residency program, teaches students how to write and perform original poetry. A biannual, school-to-school poetry slam competition is facilitated through videoconferencing, engaging hundreds of students in a series of compelling events that culminate in an Open Mic celebration at Lehman College. The Bronx Arts Learning Community is a model community partnering DreamYard with fourteen K-12th grade Bronx public schools dedicated to building sustainable, continuous art service programs designed to reach 100% of each school’s students. The DreamYard Preparatory School, a NYC Department of Education public high school with a rigorous arts-integrated curriculum, represents the organization’s best practices developed over the past 14 years. In April 2009, the DreamYard Art Center will open, an artistic hub for Bronx students and teachers to practice the arts, develop skills and showcase their talents. DreamYard's three Out of School Programs (OSP) will be housed at the Art Center to train Bronx teenagers as creative leaders with a path towards higher education. The Bronx Acting Ensemble (BAE) trains young actors on basic performance skills and the tenets of classical and modern theater. The Bronx Art Collective (BAC) provides training in visual art and curating. The ACTION Project uses the arts to develop young people as effective social leaders and active civic participants. Year-round professional development offers unique curriculum, specific to the needs of the collaborating school. Professional exhibitions celebrate high quality student artwork at venues such as Pregones Theater, Sotheby's, Inc.

When young people are given the space to express themselves, the impact is unstoppable. 🌟

Thanks to funding from the NYC Civic Engagement Commission and our partnership with WHEDco, DreamYard students recently took the stage at Bronx Music Hall. For many, it was their first time performing in a professional venue!

The best part? The inspiration was contagious. Seeing their peers perform inspired our visual arts students to transform their traditional gallery exhibition into a powerful activist skit, complete with handcrafted protest signs and a mock news interview.

This is the organic, beautiful magic that happens when we invest in Bronx youth and give them a platform to share their voices.

Hear directly from our students and see them in action:

Did you catch DreamYard on the big screen? We were honored to be featured on BronxNet Community Television's Open to chat about the power of art, social justice, our deep community roots in the Bronx, and our upcoming leadership transition.

For over three decades, we've been building on-ramps for Bronx youth to discover what's possible when art meets social justice, and we were grateful to share it with the BronxNet audience. Huge thanks to Tim, Rose, and Daniel for sharing their stories so beautifully, and to BronxNet for the incredible feature! ✊🏽🎨

A visionary in every sense of the word!

We are thrilled to celebrate longtime DreamYard Board Member, former teaching artist, and community leader, Renée Watson, for being named to the inaugural 2026 TIME Visionaries list! This groundbreaking feature honors leaders driving meaningful impact in the lives of children across education, healthcare, technology, and more.

Renée was the sole author selected for the list, recognized for her extraordinary contributions to children's literature and her dedication to helping young people process complex emotions through storytelling.

At DreamYard, we have been incredibly fortunate to witness her leadership firsthand. Whether she is guiding our board, moderating vital panels on youth activism, or inspiring the next generation of Bronx artists, Renée embodies our belief that art is a catalyst for social change.

This recognition marks a beautiful milestone during her 16th year in publishing and leads right into her Newbery Medal ceremony next week. Please join the entire DreamYard community in congratulating Renée on this historic achievement!

We are so proud to highlight this group of DreamYard alumni who have stepped into leadership roles for our Summer Professional Development Retreat!

These amazing administrators, Teaching Artists, and Legacy Fellows once walked through our doors as participants in DY Prep, Art Center Programs, SYEP, and more. Now, they are working together to run our summer internships this year! Watching our alumni return to guide the next generation is the ultimate proof of our mission in action. 🚀✨

We are bursting with pride as we reflect on the incredible performances and interactive activations our youth and teaching artists put together at our annual celebration last Tuesday! Their hard work and dedication made our 2026 Celebration unforgettable, and helped raise more than $1 million in support of DreamYard!

To everyone who joined us: thank you for wrapping our young people in support and making the evening a joyful and special experience for them. It takes a village, and we love ours!

If you weren't able to join us, you can still support DreamYard! Visit the link in our bio and make a gift today.
