Statement on the Protection of Student Rights:
In January, NYU suspended 13 students, as well as targeted and sanctioned over a dozen more, in retaliation to December protests calling for the university to disclose investments in weapon manufacturers and surveillance technology used for the genocide in Palestine(1). Four of the suspended students are Gallatin seniors and are either Jewish, trans, and/or people of color... As representatives of the Gallatin student body, it is our responsibility to stand up for the safety, rights, and liberties of all students within Gallatin. It is crucial that the Gallatin Student Council stands for a larger message of the right to free speech and protest both on and off campus.
While it is important to recognize that these suspensions do not reflect the general beliefs of students and faculty at Gallatin, Gallatin is still an institution under NYU(2). These suspensions do not exist in a vacuum.
Despite NYUâs revised Non-Discrimination Anti-Harassment Policy, there has been a recent decrease in equitable protection for marginalized students(3); NYU has moved to âcomply with the lawâ with the federal governmentâs policies related to ICE on campus(4); Gallatin has removed DEI resources from their website(5), and NYU Langone has also reportedly stopped gender-affirming care for trans youth (6). We make our statement in support of the suspended students in the context of these larger issues of protection, safety, and freedom.
Education should prioritize free political, academic, and social discourse, not aim to suppress marginalized people. GSC will not let NYUâs actions define who we are as a Gallatin community.  It is crucial that GSC stands for protections for those protesting for Palestinian liberation against institutions like NYU that actively support Imperial violence.  We call on NYU and Gallatinâs administration specifically to protect their students and the safety of education.
