Masking is real and we do a disservice to our students when we don't take the time to look deeper.

Did you know some people are not diagnosed until later in life- and there’s a GOOD reason for this?

It’s true! This is because many Autistic kids can keep up with social demands when they are younger, and then aren’t able to understand or recognize neurotypical nuances as social relationships become more complex. Social communication differences are also more clearly visible as kids get older.

It’s *also* true that many kids who are clearly Autistic at a young age do not get a diagnosis when they should. It can be hard to know from an outside or parent perspective if not getting a diagnosis at an early age is due to evaluator error or the fact that it’s just not clear yet. This is why I recommend getting a second opinion if you aren’t comfortable with initial results AND why I recommend a second evaluation (if given an initial “no”) after a child is 8 - even if there are “no concerns.”
