GPS at UTRC2 Research cluster team on GPS for transportation in the Region 2 University Transportation Research C

The four members in this research cluster team come from multi-disciplines and multi-universities in UTRC2. Dr. Maxemchuk is a professor in electrical engineering at Columbia University and an expert in using GPS for public transit. He used a combination of dead reckoning and Google maps to supplement GPS when the signal is lost. This system is being used by the MTA to track the positions of buses

on Staten Island and announce their arrival times. Dr. Gong is an associate professor in geography at CUNY Hunter College. She pilot-tested the use of person-based GPS for the 2010/11 regional household travel survey in the New York Tri-state Metro Region and have extended her GPS research to using Web GIS and smartphone for travel surveys. As an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Xuegang (Jeff) Ban has published several articles on using mobile sensors such as GPS and cellular phones for freight transportation modeling and obtained a NSF CAREER award recently to support his transportation research. Dr. Jianting Zhang is an assistant professor in computer science at CUNY City College. He has worked with a massive taxi-trip dataset with GPS recorded pickup and dropoff locations and is combining the data with land use types to identify trip purposes. Although this research cluster team starts with four members in universities, we welcome GPS and transportation professionals from government agencies, non-for-profit organizations, private industries, and other universities.
