Around about October 20th this year, my students will be ready to submit their early action and early decision applications on the Common App.

We will have spent months perfecting essays, curating the college list, engineering ECs, and more. I will have already crafted all the little 150 character descriptions on that 10-item activities list.

We will sit down for 90 minutes and carry out the student's first submissions of the cycle. They will log into their Common App, share their screen with me, and I will go through every single line of the application with a fine tooth comb looking for errors and omissions and setting them right. Then, the student will generate the PDF preview, and I will read the personal statement carefully, almost alwasy picking up on errors, and repairing them. Once everything is perfect on the main Common Application, the student will submit it and lock it. This app is going to every college on the list, and now it's set for all future submissions.

Then, we move to up to 3 of the student's top choice schools for EA or ED. I go through line by line on each one of these schools, and review all the supplemental essays in the same way I reviewed the PSE on the main Common App. Once all is pefect, the student hits submit, and the confetti falls.

This is one of the big advantages to using a skilled college consultant. They see with eyes the student doesn't have, and they know what's expected by college admissions officers in the application. Every student should avail themselves of a submission meeting.

The time of the personal statement seminar this Friday June 12th has been changed to 10 am PST and 1 pm EST.

This is a first, and may be the last, I am giving my infamous Comprehensive Personal Statement Seminar that normally only happens annually on Martin Luther King Day, in 10 days from now.

An expert essay writing instructor for the Personal Statement Essay, my students have been accepted to all Ivies, lists of T20s, and other highly competitive colleges with the essays they have learned to write with me, for the past 15 years. This past cycle, I had the highest number of Ivy admits in a cycle than ever before. Out of my 25-student senior class, 16 Ivy acceptances were received (some students received more than one)

This free seminar will last about 90 minutes on zoom, and will teach every essential ingredient and methodology to writing a successful and emotionally powerful PSE.

7 am PST, 10 am EST on Friday June 12th. This is a free master class that's not to be missed. Any student gunning for early admissions needs to have their PSE written to a gold standard by July 31, the day before the supplementals are released on Common App.

Email [email protected] with the subject line FREE PSE SEMINAR to reserve your spot.
Give the first and last name of the student, and their city.

Only rising seniors, only new students, are eligible to attend.

These meetings where my fantastically talented students deliver news that is simply ground shaking.

This deeply thinking, hard-working, young woman orginally came to me through another client who recommended me to her family. This takes me back to gratitude for my clients all the way back to day one.

I had nothing whatsoever to do with this, but my student-partner has been named Women's National All American and All Academic by USA Lacrosse.
For those in the know, these honors are extraordinary, and represent years of hard work and unrelenting committment to athletic and academic excellence. This cements invitations for her that offer her the highest possible channels for academics in her chosen field. Proud to know you does not cover it.

The admissions officer at Harvard opens your application on their computer. They read "I'm passionate about learning." for the 750th time that day. Or they read "I am driven by curiosity" for the 900th time that day, and fight back a yawn.

Telling admissions officers cookie cutter statements like this is a sure fire way to get your application tossed in the bin.

What to do instead?
Show them what you pursued with fervor in your life when no one was grading you, and nothing about that thing was required by anyone else, but you.

If you don't have that thing, FIND IT NOW. And go after it with your tail on fire. Let it take you on journeys. Share your love of it - just for the love of it.

Sitting at a Vipassana retreat. Three days of silence about to start, and there's one thing I can't stop thinking about.
The number of high schoolers emailing me about research opportunities in my lab.
In principle this should make any professor happy. More kids curious about research, what's not to love. But the volume tells me something else is going on.
I fear curiosity has become a credential. Research has become a line on a resume. 16-year-olds are reaching out not because a question is pulling them in, but because a counselor or a parent told them it would help them get into a good college.
The cost shows up later. I see it in my own classroom. 19 and 20 year olds who are already burnt out. They did everything they were told. They got the acceptance letter. And by the time they get to me, the spark is gone.
I wish we could give kids their childhood back. The space to be curious without it counting for anything. To try things, be bad at them, wander, quit, try something else.

Harvard professor shares thoughts about high school students resume stuffing.
Resume stuffing is not how to set yourself apart in undergrad college admissions. Unique focus and interest is. Curiosity is. Imagination is.

How does a student cultivate unique focus and curiosity?

1. Read high quality literary fiction and non-fiction, every single month.

2. Limit scrolling and phone time to 1 hour a day -
the only reason to go past that limit is if you are an entrepreneur and you use socials to make profits and scale your business.

3. Read high quality news every day - high quality outlets for the most part are NPR, Al Jazeera, to a degree BBC, Guardian, Pro-publica, The Atlantic - when you read the news, notice what catches you in the gut - and follow that clue toward your focused interest

4. Look outside school clubs and search the real world for the things that matter to you. Follow your heart.
