‘My scientific career is essentially over.’ A brain drain imperils Massachusetts’ biomedical future. 03/11/2026

“This is like asking, how do you think dropping an atomic bomb on New York City will affect the future of Broadway musicals? This is a generational loss of innovation, technology, and economic power.”

-An anonymous researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital responds to a survey of scientists in Massachusetts about the impact of Trump administration policies on the state, which is home to Harvard University and many other research heavy-hitters. (The Boston Globe | 18 min read)

The nation tops the table for 66 of the 74 technologies, including nuclear energy and synthetic biology, with the United States leading the other 8, including quantum computing. The results indicate that China has flipped the script over the last two decades — at the beginning of this century, the US led on research into more than 90% of assessed technologies and China less than 5%."

China leads research in 90% of crucial technologies — a dramatic shift this century The United States tops the remaining areas in an assessment of 74 technologies.
