Bobby Fischer was like a chess superhero! 🦸‍♂️

He was so good at the game that he became a world champion when he was just a kid. Even though he was only 15, he could beat almost every grown-up on Earth! He showed everyone that you don't have to be big to be the best.

When a pawn travels all the way to the very last row on the other side of the board, it earns a special "level up" called "promotion". Since the pawn reached the finish line, it gets to transform into any other piece you want, except for a King or another pawn. Most players choose to turn their pawn into a Queen because she is the most powerful piece in the game, but you can also pick a Rook, Bishop, or Knight.

Interestingly, you can have more than one Queen on the board at a time, so if you promote three pawns, you could technically have four Queens total! This move happens instantly on the same turn the pawn lands on that last square, and it’s often the best way to turn a tough game into a big win.

A gambit is a clever chess move where you "sacrifice" or give away a piece for free at the very start of the game.

It might seem like a mistake, but you are actually doing it on purpose to trick your opponent and clear a path for your stronger pieces! While your opponent is busy taking your piece, you use that time to take control of the center of the board. It’s a brave and sneaky strategy hat sets you up for an epic win and makes the whole game way more exciting.

In this picture, we can see the beginning of the famous Queen's Gambit!

I work exclusively in person because I believe it’s the best way to connect with young champions and help them thrive 🏆. Each lesson is 60 minutes, but I’m flexible—if I notice your child’s attention span fading, we can take a break to play with toys 🧸, chat about cartoons 🎥, or talk about anything they enjoy. My rate is $75 per hour 💵, and I provide the chessboard ♟️ for our sessions. Later on, I can assign light homework ✏️ if you’d like to reinforce their learning. My goal is to make chess fun and engaging while fostering growth! 🌟

The bishop is like a speedy rocket 🚀 that can only fly on a slant! He loves to zoom across the board, but he can only move diagonally ↘️↖️—like a slide! If he starts on a light-colored square ⚪, he has to stay on light squares. If he starts on a dark square ⚫, he has to stick to dark squares. He can go as far as he wants, but always in that straight diagonal line, like he's following the edges of a triangle 🔺!

Research shows that starting chess between ages 4-10 can have amazing benefits for a child's brain development. 🧠♟️ Studies highlight how playing chess boosts problem-solving skills by teaching kids to think ahead and plan their moves. 🧩

Kids who play chess also improve their memory because they need to remember different strategies and piece movements. 📝 According to scientists, regular chess practice can increase a child's focus and attention span, helping them stay on task in school. 🎯

The game also strengthens critical thinking, as young players learn to evaluate different options before making decisions. 🧐 Chess enhances creativity, too, encouraging children to think outside the box to outsmart their opponents. ✨

Research suggests that children who play chess tend to do better in math, as both activities involve patterns and logical reasoning. 🔢 Overall, chess can shape a well-rounded, smarter, and more confident young mind! 🌟

Chess is a game where two players move pieces on a board. The goal is to catch the other player's king. Each piece moves in its own way. You win by putting the king in "checkmate." Have fun and try to catch the king first!

The Chess Players
Thomas Eakins 1876

In this painting, the artist’s father watches a chess game between two friends in a Renaissance Revival parlor of a Philadelphia home. Eakins honored his father with a Latin inscription on the drawer of the chess table, which translates as “Benjamin Eakins’s son painted this in ’76.” A reproduction of a painting by Eakins’s principal French teacher, Jean-Léon Gérôme, hangs over the mantel. Eakins adhered to Gérôme’s academic lessons in his careful spatial construction and meticulous detail. In 1881 The Chess Players became the first work to be accepted by the Metropolitan Museum as a gift from a living artist.
