7 THINGS TO DO BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP IN ISLAM

You charge your phone before sleeping.

You set your alarm.

You check your messages one last time.

But how do you prepare your soul for the night?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us a beautiful bedtime routine.

Here are 7 Sunnahs worth making part of every night:

1. MAKE WUDU BEFORE SLEEPING

The Prophet ﷺ instructed:

“When you go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer…”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 247

You may have spent the entire day surrounded by distractions.

End it in a state of purification.

2. RECITE AYAT AL-KURSI

Before you sleep, recite Ayat al-Kursi — Qur’an 2:255.

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه was told that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi when going to bed will have a guardian from Allah and Shaytan will not approach until morning.

When this was related to the Prophet ﷺ, he confirmed that the statement was true, although the one who had said it was Shaytan.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 2311

Imagine making this one verse part of your routine every single night.

3. RECITE THE THREE QULS — THREE TIMES

Before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would bring his palms together and recite:

Surah Al-Ikhlas
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

Surah Al-Falaq
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ

Surah An-Nas
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ

He ﷺ would then lightly blow into his hands and wipe over as much of his body as possible, beginning with his head, face and the front of his body.

He did this THREE TIMES.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 5017

4. RECITE THE LAST TWO VERSES OF SURAH AL-BAQARAH

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 5009

These are:

آمَنَ ٱلرَّسُولُ...

Qur’an 2:285–286

Make them part of your nightly Qur’an.

5. SAY 33× SUBHANALLAH, 33× ALHAMDULILLAH & 34× ALLAHU AKBAR

Fatimah رضي الله عنها came seeking help because of the difficulty of her work.

The Prophet ﷺ taught her and ‘Ali رضي الله عنهما something to say when going to bed:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ — 33 times

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ — 33 times

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ — 34 times

He told them this was better for them than what they had requested.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 5361–5362

100 words of remembrance before you close your eyes.

6. LIE DOWN ON YOUR RIGHT SIDE

The Prophet ﷺ instructed Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib رضي الله عنه:

“…then lie down on your right side.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 247

Something as ordinary as your sleeping position can become an act of following the Sunnah when done intentionally.

7. END YOUR NIGHT REMEMBERING ALLAH

The Prophet ﷺ taught beautiful duas to say when going to sleep.

Among them:

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ

Bismika Rabbi wada‘tu janbi wa bika arfa‘uhu…

“In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it…”

The dua continues by asking Allah for mercy if He takes the soul and protection if He returns it.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 6320

There is something profound about this dua.

Every night you close your eyes without knowing with certainty that you will open them again.

So don't let scrolling be the final thing your heart knows before sleep.

Let it be:

Qur’an.

Dhikr.

Dua.

And remembrance of Allah.

TONIGHT, TRY THIS ROUTINE:

→ Make wudu
→ Recite Ayat al-Kursi
→ Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq & An-Nas ×3
→ Recite Qur’an 2:285–286
→ Say SubhanAllah ×33, Alhamdulillah ×33, Allahu Akbar ×34
→ Lie on your right side
→ Recite your bedtime duas

You don't have to transform your entire life tonight.

Start by transforming the final few minutes of your day.

May Allah protect us throughout the night, forgive our sins, give our hearts peace, and allow us to wake for another day of worshipping Him.

Ameen.

SAVE this as your nightly checklist.

SHARE it with someone you want to see protected by Allah.

Tiyaarah is shirk .
Tiyaarah is the Islamic term for superstition, specifically the belief in bad luck, evil omens, or pessimistic signs.

It refers to the idea that a person, object, number, or event can automatically cause bad luck or bring harm, independent of God's will.

Modern-day Tiyarah looks like...
● "My eye is twitching - that's a bad sign"
● "Shoes upside down? Flip them immediately"
● "A black cat crossed my path - cancel the plan"
● " Itchy palm means money is leaving" and many more...

All of it? Tiyarah

Why does Islam forbid it?
Because it silently shifts your trust - from Allah to a crow, a date, a number.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Tiyarah is shirk."
It is haram because it means the heart is attached to something other than Allah.

And what's the cure? He ﷺ told us himself - Tawakkul. Trust
✨ What does Islam love instead?

"Al-Fa'l" - absolute optimism, positive thinking, and always expecting the best outcome from God.

🧠 The Cure in 3 Steps:
1. Push through it: Never let a "bad vibe" or superstition stop your plans.
2. Shift your mindset: Rely completely on God, not random signs.
3. Reset with Dua: Ask for peace and protection, shifting from fear to faith.

Not signs. Not symbols. Just husn al-dhann - good thoughts about Allah.

WHY IS PRAYER IN THE HATEEM SO SPECIAL?

Millions of Muslims visit the Ka‘bah.

They make tawaf around it.

They look toward it when they pray.

But beside the Ka‘bah is a small semicircular wall that many people may not fully understand.

It is commonly called:

THE HATEEM

or

HIJR ISMA‘IL.

And there is something remarkable about it:

PART OF THE AREA INSIDE THAT WALL IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE KA‘BAH.

Here is the story.

1. ‘AISHAH رضي الله عنها WANTED TO PRAY INSIDE THE KA‘BAH

‘Aishah رضي الله عنها said:

“I wanted to enter the House and pray therein.”

So the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took her by the hand and brought her into the Hijr.

Then he told her:

“Pray in the Hijr if you want to enter the House, for it is a part of the House.”

— Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 876; Sunan Abi Dawud 2028

Think about what that means.

She wanted to pray inside the Ka‘bah.

The Prophet ﷺ directed her to the Hijr.

2. WHY IS PART OF IT OUTSIDE THE PRESENT WALLS OF THE KA‘BAH?

the Prophet ﷺ told ‘Aishah رضي الله عنها why construction of kabba differed from the foundations associated with Ibrahim عليه السلام.

The Prophet ﷺ explained that when Quraysh rebuilt the Ka‘bah, their available funds fell short, so they excluded part of the original foundations from the building.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 126; Sahih Muslim 1333

That excluded portion is why the semicircular area matters.

3. SO PRAYING THERE IS LIKE PRAYING INSIDE THE KA‘BAH

This is what makes the Hijr so extraordinary.

The Prophet ﷺ told ‘Aishah رضي الله عنها to pray there when she wished to enter the House.

So if Allah gives you the opportunity to offer a voluntary prayer within the relevant part of the Hijr, you are praying in an area belonging to the Ka‘bah.

For many Muslims, physically entering the Ka‘bah itself may never be possible.

But Allah may give them the opportunity to pray in the Hijr.

4. BUT THERE IS AN IMPORTANT RULE DURING TAWAF

Because the Hijr includes part of the Ka‘bah, you must perform tawaf AROUND it.

You cannot cut through the Hijr during a circuit of tawaf.

Why?

Because tawaf must go around the Ka‘bah.

If you walk through the Hijr, you have passed through an area that includes part of the House rather than going completely around it.

5. DON'T HARM PEOPLE TRYING TO REACH IT

Knowing its virtue should not make us forget Islamic character.

The area can become extremely crowded.

Do not push.

Do not hurt someone.

Do not fight for a place.

Do not turn a voluntary act into a reason for harming another Muslim.

If Allah makes a safe opportunity for you, pray.

If not, Allah knows what was in your heart.

6. DON'T INVENT A SPECIAL PRAYER FOR THE HATEEM

There is no need to create a special number of rak‘ahs or a special formula of dua specifically for the Hateem without evidence.

If you get the opportunity, you may offer voluntary Salah there and make dua to Allah.

The virtue comes from the place itself being connected to the Ka‘bah — not from an invented ritual.

7. REMEMBER THIS IF YOU EVER VISIT MAKKAH

When you see that semicircular wall beside the Ka‘bah, don't see it merely as an architectural feature.

Remember ‘Aishah رضي الله عنها.

She wanted to enter the Ka‘bah and pray inside.

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took her to the Hijr and told her:

“Pray in the Hijr if you want to enter the House…”

So if Allah ever gives you the opportunity to stand there in Salah, understand where you are standing.

A place connected to the House toward which you have turned in prayer thousands of times throughout your life.

May Allah invite us to His Sacred House, grant us sincere worship there, accept our Salah, Tawaf and duas, and allow us to return again and again.

Ameen.

SAVE this for your Umrah or Hajj.

And SHARE it with someone who dreams of visiting the Ka‘bah.

WHY IS WUDU SO IMPORTANT BEFORE OFFERING SALAH?

CAN WE NOT JUST PRAY WITHOUT IT?

You are late.

Salah time is running out.

You know your wudu has broken.

And you think:

“Allah knows my heart… can't I just pray?”

The answer is something every Muslim should understand.

WUDU IS NOT JUST ABOUT BEING PHYSICALLY CLEAN.

It is an act of worship and ritual purification that Allah has connected directly to Salah.

1. ALLAH HIMSELF COMMANDED PURIFICATION FOR SALAH

Allah says:

“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles…”

— Qur’an 5:6

So wudu is not simply an Islamic hygiene recommendation.

It is part of preparing yourself to stand before Allah.

2. CAN YOU PRAY WITHOUT WUDU?

If you are in a state of minor ritual impurity and are able to purify yourself normally, you cannot simply choose to perform Salah without purification.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah does not accept the prayer of any one of you if he breaks his wudu until he performs wudu.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 135; Sahih Muslim 225

So if your wudu has broken, renew it before Salah.

But remember:

YOU DO NOT NEED NEW WUDU FOR EVERY PRAYER.

If you made wudu for Dhuhr and nothing happened afterward that invalidated it, you can pray ‘Asr with the same wudu.

And even Maghrib, if your wudu remains valid.

3. WHAT IF THERE IS NO WATER?

Islam does not tell you simply to abandon Salah.

Allah has given another form of purification:

TAYAMMUM.

Allah says that when water cannot be found under the prescribed circumstances, believers may use clean earth for tayammum.

— Qur’an 5:6

So even when normal wudu cannot be performed, Allah has provided an alternative.

4. WHAT IF USING WATER COULD HARM YOU?

Illness and circumstances where water cannot safely be used have rulings concerning tayammum.

Allah mentions illness and travel when explaining this concession.

— Qur’an 5:6

Islam does not command you to harm yourself merely to make wudu.

If you have a genuine medical or practical circumstance, learn the appropriate ruling rather than simply abandoning Salah.

5. WUDU DOES MORE THAN WASH YOUR BODY

The Prophet ﷺ described an extraordinary spiritual virtue of wudu.

When a Muslim washes the face, hands and feet during wudu, sins committed by those limbs are washed away with the water until the person emerges cleansed of sins.

— Sahih Muslim 244

Think about that the next time you make wudu.

You may see water running into the sink.

But Allah has attached something far greater to that simple act.

6. WUDU PREPARES YOU TO STAND BEFORE ALLAH

Throughout the day you are occupied with:

Work.

Money.

Messages.

Problems.

People.

Deadlines.

Then the Adhan comes.

You stop.

You wash.

You leave the dunya behind for a moment.

And you stand before your Creator.

Wudu becomes the transition between the noise of your day and your meeting with Allah in Salah.

7. ALLAH DID NOT LEGISLATE WUDU TO MAKE LIFE DIFFICULT

After explaining wudu, ghusl and tayammum, Allah says something beautiful:

“Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you…”

— Qur’an 5:6

Read that again.

Allah does not want hardship for you.

He wants to purify you.

So don't think:

“Why do I have to make wudu again?”

Think:

“Allah is allowing me to purify myself before I stand before Him again.”

Wudu is not an obstacle before Salah.

Wudu is preparation for Salah.

So when your wudu breaks:

Renew it.

When water genuinely cannot be used:

Learn the rules of tayammum.

And when your wudu is still valid:

You don't need to repeat it merely because another prayer time has arrived.

Never let uncertainty about purification become the reason you abandon Salah.

Learn it.

Keep it simple.

And stand before Allah in the state of purification He has prescribed.

May Allah make us among those who guard their purification, protect their Salah, and stand before Him with sincere and humble hearts.

Ameen.

THE MAN WHO CALLED HIMSELF “SUMNUN THE LIAR”

Centuries ago, there lived a well-known ascetic named Sumnun al-Muhibb.

He was known for his intense love and devotion to Allah.

It is related that one day, overwhelmed by his love for Allah, Sumnun expressed words to the effect:

“O Allah, I love You so much. Test me however You wish, and You will see how patiently I endure it.”

Then came the test.

Sumnun was afflicted with an extremely painful condition involving an inability to urinate.

The pain became unbearable.

The man who had spoken so confidently about enduring any trial now found himself struggling under the weight of one.

According to the story, he was advised to seek the du‘a of young children studying the Qur’an.

So Sumnun went to them.

But notice what he called himself:

سَمْنُونَ الْكَذَّاب

“SUMNUN THE LIAR.”

He reportedly asked them:

“Make du‘a for your uncle Sumnun, the liar.”

Why “the liar”?

Because he had once spoken as though he could patiently endure whatever trial came his way.

Then, when the trial actually arrived, he discovered his own weakness.

Eventually, it is related that he recovered.

But perhaps the most powerful part of this story isn't the illness.

It is what Sumnun learned about himself.

Sometimes we imagine ourselves stronger than we really are.

We say:

“I could handle that.”

“My iman is strong.”

“I would remain patient.”

“I would never do what that person did.”

But we don't truly know how we will respond until Allah allows us to be tested.

That is why the believer does not ask Allah to prove how strong he is.

He asks Allah for ‘AFIYAH.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Ask Allah for forgiveness and well-being (‘afiyah), for no one is given anything after certainty of faith better than well-being.”

— Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3558

Don't ask for a difficult test just to prove your iman.

Ask Allah to protect you.

And if a test does come, ask Him to give you the sabr to endure it.

Because our strength was never supposed to come from ourselves.

It comes from Allah.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ

“O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being.”

BEST TIMES FOR ACCEPTANCE OF DUA

Sometimes the dua is already in your heart.

You know exactly what you want to ask Allah for.

But did you know there are particular times and situations in which the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah especially encourage dua?

Save these:

1. DURING THE LAST THIRD OF THE NIGHT

When most people are asleep, get up and speak to Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said that during the last third of every night, our Lord calls:

“Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him?”

“Who is asking Me that I may give him?”

“Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 1145; Sahih Muslim 758

If something has been weighing heavily on your heart, take it to Allah in the quiet of the night.

2. WHILE IN SUJOOD

The place where your forehead touches the ground may be one of the most precious places for your dua.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so make supplication abundantly.”

— Sahih Muslim 482

Don't rush your sujood.

There are things you tell nobody else.

Tell Allah.

3. BETWEEN THE ADHAN AND IQAMAH

Those few minutes before the congregational prayer should not always be spent scrolling on your phone.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The supplication made between the Adhan and the Iqamah is not rejected.”

— Sunan Abi Dawud 521; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 212

Put the phone away.

Raise your hands.

Ask Allah.

4. BEFORE THE SALAM AT THE END OF SALAH

After the final tashahhud and before ending your Salah with salam, there is an important opportunity for dua.

After teaching the tashahhud, the Prophet ﷺ instructed the worshipper to choose from supplications whatever he wished.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 835; Sahih Muslim 402

Learn the authentic duas taught by the Prophet ﷺ and ask Allah for what you need.

5. ON FRIDAY — THERE IS A SPECIAL HOUR

The Prophet ﷺ taught that on Friday there is a period during which, if a Muslim asks Allah for something good, Allah grants it.

— Sahih al-Bukhari 935; Sahih Muslim 852

Scholars have differed regarding the precise identification of this hour.

One particularly important opinion, supported by narrations, places it toward the end of Friday after ‘Asr until sunset.

So don't allow Friday afternoon to disappear without dua.

6. WHEN YOU ARE FASTING

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the supplication of the fasting person among supplications that are not rejected.

— Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3598

And there are narrations specifically mentioning the fasting person at the time of breaking the fast.

So before you become occupied with your food at iftar, remember what your heart has been asking Allah for.

7. WHEN RAIN FALLS

Rain is a mercy from Allah, and a narration states that dua is not rejected in two situations: at the time of the call to prayer and when rain falls.

— Sunan Abi Dawud 2540

When you hear the rain outside, don't only enjoy the weather.

Remember Allah.

And make dua.

BUT REMEMBER THIS:

These special times do not mean Allah only hears you at these times.

Allah says:

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”

— Qur’an 2:186

So make dua in Tahajjud.

Make dua in sujood.

Make dua between Adhan and Iqamah.

Make dua on Friday.

Make dua while fasting.

Make dua when rain falls.

But also make dua on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon when your heart suddenly needs Allah.

You do not need perfect words.

You need sincerity.

And never think that because you have not yet seen the answer, Allah has not heard you.

Keep asking.

Keep trusting.

Keep returning to Him.

May Allah accept the duas we whisper, the duas we repeat, and even the duas our hearts struggle to put into words.

Ameen.

SAVE this post so you remember these moments.

And SHARE it with someone whose dua you want Allah to accept.

5 NATIONS ALLAH DESTROYED IN THE QUR’AN - AND WHY

They had homes.

They had wealth.

They had power.

They had civilizations.

And they probably thought life would continue exactly as it always had.

But the Qur’an tells us about communities that repeatedly rejected Allah’s messengers and persisted in wrongdoing until punishment came.

Their stories were not preserved merely as history.

They were preserved as warnings.

Here are 5 of them:

1. THE PEOPLE OF ‘AD

Allah sent Prophet Hud عليه السلام to ‘Ad.

They were a powerful people, but they rejected their messenger and persisted in arrogance and disbelief.

Then Allah sent against them a violent wind.

Allah says:

“And as for ‘Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind.”

It continued upon them for:

“seven nights and eight days in succession…”

— Qur’an 69:6–7

Their strength could not save them.

Their civilization could not save them.

When Allah’s command came, worldly power meant nothing.

2. THE PEOPLE OF THAMUD

Allah sent Prophet Salih عليه السلام to Thamud.

They were given a clear sign, yet they rejected their messenger and wronged themselves.

Then the punishment came.

Allah says:

“And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone.”

— Qur’an 11:67

The homes they had built could not protect them from the command of Allah.

3. THE PEOPLE OF LUT عليه السلام

Prophet Lut عليه السلام warned his people, but they persisted in grave immorality and rejected his warnings.

Then Allah’s punishment arrived.

Allah says:

“So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered hard clay…”

— Qur’an 11:82–83

Their story remains one of the Qur’an’s most serious warnings about persistent rebellion against Allah after clear admonition.

4. THE PEOPLE OF SHU‘AYB عليه السلام

Shu‘ayb عليه السلام called his people to fear Allah.

Among the wrongs condemned in his preaching were dishonesty in trade, cheating people in measurements and spreading corruption.

He told them:

“Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.”

“And weigh with an even balance.”

— Qur’an 26:181–182

But they rejected him.

Allah says:

“And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.”

— Qur’an 26:189

Their story reminds us that corruption is not limited to what happens inside a place of worship.

How we earn money and how we treat people financially matter to Allah too.

5. PHARAOH AND HIS PEOPLE

Pharaoh possessed enormous worldly authority.

He oppressed people and arrogantly rejected the message brought by Musa عليه السلام.

But eventually his army, status and authority could not protect him.

Allah says:

“So We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea. So see how was the end of the wrongdoers.”

— Qur’an 28:40

The man who behaved as though nothing could overpower him was powerless when Allah’s command arrived.

THE LESSON IS NOT:

“Look how terrible those people were.”

The deeper question is:

What are WE supposed to learn from their stories?

Arrogance destroyed people before us.

Oppression destroyed people before us.

Rejecting Allah’s guidance destroyed people before us.

Cheating and corruption were condemned before us.

Persistent rebellion after warning had consequences before us.

The Qur’an does not tell these stories so that we can feel superior to ancient nations.

It tells us to reflect.

Because civilizations change.

Buildings change.

Technology changes.

But the diseases of the human heart can remain frighteningly similar.

So when you read about the people of ‘Ad, Thamud, Lut, Shu‘ayb and Pharaoh, do not only ask:

“What happened to them?”

Ask:

“What is Allah teaching me through what happened to them?”

May Allah protect our hearts from arrogance, oppression and persistent disobedience, grant us sincere tawbah before it is too late, and make us among those who hear His reminders and take heed.

Ameen.

SAVE this reminder.

SHARE it so someone else can reflect on these stories from the Qur’an.
