Japanese Program at Lehman College

Our partner students from OMU Virtual Language Tables came to visit us today. We had nice breakfast together, and the Lehman students in the Advanced Japanese class did their presentations on Japanese food. The OMU students helped us make Onigiri (rice balls) for lunch. We had so much fun together… ありがとう😊

Our students in the Japanese Program and Hanamaru Club volunteered to host two activity tables at Bunkasai@Hunter, an annual Japanese Cultural Festival for the high school students studying Japanese in NYC and other nearby communities. Our tables hosted the Kitkat flavor guessing game, which was very popular last year, so we doubled the fun this year! Nearly 500 high school students participated in the event, with close to 200 volunteers and staff. It was wonderful to see so many students excited to learn Japanese. Hopefully some of them will come to Lehman to continue their study of Japanese😊

The Japanese Program hosted the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) again this year, and it was a great success. More than 500 people were registered to take this international certificate exam, which happens once a year worldwide on the first Sunday of December. We would like to thank all the committee members, proctors and administrative staff for their hard work to make this testing possible. We also like to thank other heroes who make this huge operation possible: The B&G supervisor Sandra, the custodial staff Doreen and Luis, and the engineer Phil for setting up all the testing rooms and keep all those rooms clean, warm and quiet. Officer Ventura and Officer Maracallo from Public Safety for directing the large group of test takers and keeping them orderly. The local Japanese restaurant Palace of Japan for preparing a large order of lunch boxes before their regular business hours and delivering them with the whole family on a Sunday morning for us every year. Without their support, we would not be able to administer this exam. We are truly grateful... thank you🙇🏻‍♀️

Language Fair on November 17 featured demonstrations and workshops of two traditional Japanese arts - Tea Ceremony and Flower Arrangement, offered by the Japan Information Center at the Consulate General of Japan in New York.

Students and faculty of the Japanese Program at Lehman College enjoyed “An Evening of Traditional Japanese Arts” at Carnegie Hall on Friday, 11/14. Noh and Kabuki, taiko drumming, and shamisen performance all in one evening. It was amazing!

Ten Lehman students participated in a unique summer study abroad program that combined Collaborative Online Learning with immersive, hands-on research in Japan. 🇯🇵 Run in partnership with Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU), students collaborated online in groups with their Japanese OMU peers to develop research projects related to Japanese culture and history. “When we actually go to Japan, each group goes on self-planned research trips to learn more about their topic,” said Asako Tochika, Japanese language professor at Lehman.
