Kenya Education Fund We help children reach their full potential by providing full scholarships for high school and the first year of university NKCEF merged with KEF in 2011.

The story of KEF weaves together the rich histories of three organizations: the Kenya Education Fund (established in 2006), the Nomadic Kenyan Children’s Educational Fund (NKCEF, established in 2001), and the Children of Kibera Foundation (established in 2007). KEF has over 20 years of collective experience working to promote education in Kenya. KEF was started by Bradley Broder, a former Peace Co

rps Volunteer, and Dominic Muasya, a local community leader, to keep kids in high school when their means did not allow it. NKCEF was formed after a group of families from McLean, Virginia, accompanied their children’s high school teacher, Hon. Joseph Lekuton, on a trip to his nomadic homeland in Northern Kenya, where many of the children were not in school. The Children of Kibera Foundation was founded by the Honorable Ken Okoth (Kibera) and provides hundreds of educational scholarships to primary, secondary, and university students from Kibera, Africa’s largest slum. KEF Second-Year University Students came together in Nairobi for our pilot Alumni Engagement Forum! Over two days, our students had the opportunity to learn, connect, and look beyond the classroom through conversations on financial literacy, mental health, personal branding, entrepreneurship, university mentorship, and navigating “black tax.”

A huge thank you to the KEF alumni, professionals, mentors, and facilitators who generously shared their time, experiences, and wisdom with our students.
This forum was a reminder of the power of community and mentorship. By connecting our students with those who have walked the journey before them, we are helping them prepare not just for graduation but for the opportunities, responsibilities, and realities that come after university.

A great conversation to kick off the back-to-school week!

Today, our Country Director joined Y254 for an engaging conversation on the changing world of education, career opportunities, and how we can better prepare young people for the future.

From nurturing students’ interests early and exploring the many diverse career pathways available, to the role of Human-Centered Design in schools and the opportunities created through CBE, the conversation highlighted the importance of preparing learners for life beyond the classroom.

We also explored the gaps that still need attention from access to internships and stronger partnerships with companies, to essential employability skills such as CV writing and negotiation.

At KEF, our support goes beyond scholarships. We work directly with students and schools to help young people explore their potential, develop relevant skills, and access opportunities that can shape their futures. And with over 70% of our team being KEF alumni, we are incredibly proud to see the impact come full circle.

The Kenya Education Fund (KEF) is now accepting applications for the 2027 Scholarship Program. If you meet our academic merit and financial need criteria, we encourage you to apply.

This week, Kenya Education Fund (KEF) had the privilege of meeting with CFK Africa to discuss some of the most pressing challenges facing children and families in Kenya's informal settlements.

A key focus of the conversation was the reintroduction of young mothers in grade 9 aged 13–16 back into high school, ensuring they have a second chance to pursue their education and build brighter futures.

For the past 25 years, KEF has remained committed to its vision of self-reliance for people in Kenya through education. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they face.

Together, through collaboration and shared purpose, we can create pathways that empower more young people to transform their lives through education.

What an incredible journey! Since launching the Walk for Education Challenge on 1st July, our community has achieved something remarkable.

Over 6 million steps have been taken.
178 walkers stepped up for underprivileged children in Kenya.
19 teams came together and competed to make education possible for more young people.

Together, we virtually walked the route from Nairobi to Nakuru, proving that every step can create opportunity and transform lives. But the journey doesn't end here.

At Kenya Education Fund, we provide school uniforms because every student deserves to feel like they belong. Uniforms are mandatory in Kenyan schools.
A new uniform is more than clothing, it gives a student confidence, boosts self-esteem, and removes the fear of standing out because of worn or inadequate clothing. When students feel accepted by their peers, they can focus on what truly matters: learning, growing, and building their future.
