For , we’re celebrating the life and legacy of Black classicist Julian Abele, who once said of his work in Horace Trumbauer’s office: “The lines are all Mr. Trumbauer’s, but the shadows are all mine.”
Though he was chief architect at the firm and even co-headed it after Trumbauer’s death, Abele has remained largely in Trumbauer’s “shadow,” partially because he took virtually no credit for the projects he worked on (as was typical for large firms of the time). The important exception is his work on the campus of Duke University.
Since his death, historians have uncovered Abele’s key role in other iconic Trumbauer designs like the Philadelphia Museum of Art (including the steps from Rocky!). In this clip from our 2022 profile of Abele, architectural historian David Brownlee discusses some of these recent revelations about Abele’s remarkable career.
