Nearly 72 years young, 47+ years of running, and still asking, “Why not?”

Meet Roger, a Team Wilpers athlete who refuses to put a limit on what comes next.

When Roger began working with Coach Justin in January 2024, a routine physical uncovered a severe heart valve issue. Open-heart surgery, complications, and eventually a pacemaker brought his training to a complete stop.

But not his goals.

Once cleared to run again, Justin rebuilt his training slowly, thoughtfully, and adaptively.

Today, Roger is back racing half marathons and 10Ks, strength training, riding his Peloton, and looking toward what’s next (HYROX!).

Roger calls this “the most structured and disciplined and enjoyable running I have ever done.” And his mindset says it all: “Last I looked, this life isn’t a dress rehearsal.”

We’re incredibly proud to call Roger a Team Wilpers athlete and grateful Justin has been in his corner through every step. 💙

Here’s to staying curious, chasing what’s next, and making every mile count. 👏

Your story matters, too. Have you overcome an obstacle, chased a goal you weren’t sure was possible, or surprised yourself with what you could do?

Shoe shopping? Team Wilpers Coach Laurel has 3 things she always checks before choosing a training shoe for running:

1. Support: Is it supportive enough for your foot?

2. Toe box: Is there enough room for your toes? Too little space could result in black toenails.

3. Bounce: Is it cushioned and comfortable without feeling too “marshmallowy”?

What’s your favorite running shoe? Share it in the comments to help a fellow runner who’s looking for a new pair.

The takeaway? You don't need a perfect schedule to make training happen. You need to find a way to make it work.

Training doesn’t always feel good. There are hard workouts, setbacks, low-motivation days, and moments when the goal feels farther away.

For World Mental Health Day, we asked our coaches, "How do you stay mentally strong when training gets tough?" 💙

Their answers are different, but the message is the same: mental strength isn’t about never struggling. It’s about learning how to navigate the struggle.

Sometimes that means reconnecting with your “why.”
- Adjusting the plan.
- Asking for help.
- Or simply taking a rest day.

Your mental health is part of your training, too.

What helps you keep going when things get hard?

Our Team Wilpers coaches curated a playlist for the NYC Marathon, inspired by The Big Apple and their favorite songs that carry them through a workout.

Are you proud of yourself yet? Your race result is only one piece of the story.

Did you commit to the process?
Did you adapt when things didn't go according to plan?
Did you make healthier choices?
Did you learn something?
Did you keep showing up?

Those are wins, too.

So before you cross that finish line, ask yourself: "Am I proud of the work I've put in?"

You don't have to wait until the end to be proud of yourself. 💙
