When a student or performer decides on what piece to work on next, what edition or source they use DOES matter.
Many students carry a certain blue book around, published by Henle Verlag. These are urtext editions, and their role is to reproduce music with the most authenticity available. They include scholarly research into the pieces they present and can reduce doubt a musician might have during their journey with the piece. However, different urtext editions can use different sources which will lead to differences in markings and notes.
