Yesterday, I was blown away while listening to Rosanna Carteri on Countermelody. While looking for the complete Traviata online, I was fortunate to stumble on this AMAZING resource-- the Internet Archive. Absolutely worth your time, and a donation is truly warranted. https://archive.org/

‘Life of Pi’ Review: A Boy and a Tiger, Burning Brightly 07/10/2023

Last night I saw the amazing "Life of Pi" at the Schoenfeld. They are closing July 23. Those who know me, will be impressed I stood for the curtain calls. I ONLY stand when I feel I have experienced something truly excellent. I went in cold, as I have neither read the book, nor seen the film. It is a wonderful evening-- a truly magical "coup de theatre". I urge you to see it before it closes.

‘Life of Pi’ Review: A Boy and a Tiger, Burning Brightly Human ingenuity and animal grace course through this rich, inventive play about difficult choices and the stories we tell to make sense of them.

Last night, I had the enormous pleasure of attending closing night of Marilyn Maye's birthday celebration run at 54 Below. As one reviewer noted, Ms. Maye is "reliably excellent". In this world of unearned, proforma, standing ovations, one of the few who truly deserves a standing O, is Ms. Maye. She was in terrific voice last night (she is 95, in case you don't know), and was her usual charming, humorous and marvelous self while turning in a performance no one I can currently name in this genre can match. She defines the art of the cabaret performer, inhabits every phrase, and is a consummate storyteller weaving together one scenario after the next using the American Songbook repertoire. If you are a performer, (or aspire to be), or if you love great songs composed by the likes of Richard Rodgers, Johnny Mercer, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim (to name just a few she sang last night) personalized in a way no one else can, you must make it a point to see her in the October run at 54 Below. Not only does she embody "how it's done" with every phrase, she is a delight to watch while she does it. Kudos to her terrific trio led by Ted Firth (he was on fire last night!). Make sure you go when she comes back in October--- she is truly a living legend who is always thrilled you have made time to come see her have fun performing for you and toss in a few kicks. I ALWAYS stand for excellence! https://54below.org/events/come-celebrate-with-marilyn-maye/

A whiter shade of grail 03/07/2023

Having seen Lohengrin at the Met on Sunday, my take away is the production is completely "missing in action". I felt badly for all the singers, who basically had NO direction whatsoever. The choral material was beautifully and powerfully sung. As always, the orchestra sounded wonderful (despite the incredibly slow tempi). I especially enjoyed Brian Mulligan, whom I had not heard before. My favorite review is here:

A whiter shade of grail It seems that François Girard has been watching a little too much Star Wars lately. His new production of Lohengrin, which opened at the Metropolitan Opera Sunday afternoon, reduced Wagner’s opera to a knockoff space opera, full of hackneyed sci-fi tropes and B-rated futurist apologue.

New York, New York: A New Musical Trailer 02/02/2023

Congrats to the wonderfully talented Gabriella Enriquez, who is part of the New York, New York Broadway cast. I have the pleasure of having her on my studio roster of gifted professionals (we prepped her recent Evita run at Buck's County this past summer) . The New York, New York trailer is launched--- look for the gorgeous gal in the yellow dress showing off her dancing talent. She is as lovely a person as she is amazing a performer!
