Kindergarteners recently completed their first narrative writing piece! As part of the process, they used a helpful graphic organizer to think through the beginning, middle, and end of their stories. Students were proud to finish their pieces and excited to get started on their next writing project!

Congratulations to World Languages Teacher Mariana Goycoechea on being selected to participate in Self-Evident Truths: Indigenizing the US Survey, an master class focused on teaching the history of Indigenous people in the Americas. Mariana shares, “I was grateful to meet and learn alongside other instructors, and returned to Hewitt with new resources for my classes, such as creating digital timelines. In my senior seminar, Women in French and Francophone Literature and Culture, creating a timeline of Marie Antoinette’s life helped students use digital storytelling to retain key dates and visualize overlaps between her life and other major moments in history.

Upper school precalculus students got hands-on practice using the Pythagorean Theorem and the special right triangle ratios to find the coordinates of points on a unit circle. Next, these mathematicians will use the tools and strategies they've been practicing to create graphs of trigonometric functions.

Upper schoolers in Hewitt’s Comparative Religions course examine the ideas and histories of a diverse range of religious traditions in both ancient and modern contexts. Throughout the fall and winter, the class enhanced their study of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam through meetings with clergy members and religious scholars and visits to local places of worship, including Congregation Emanu-El, St. Jean Baptiste Church, and the Islamic Cultural Center of New York.

In recent weeks, middle schoolers studied matter and energy in science class, created spring toys in the Innovation Lab, solved multi-step word problems and absolute value inequalities in math, examined primary sources in history, and explored the themes of class and friendship in Of Mice and Men. At Hewitt, dance students explore a variety of techniques and styles, including classical ballet, modern, jazz, and contemporary lyrical. Through their classes, students build endurance, muscle memory, and creative expression while developing their technical skills and creating their own choreography.

Thank you to this Hewitt student and her mom for helping us celebrate Hanukkah! After learning about the holiday's story and traditions, fifth graders got the chance to play dreidel games and sing Hanukkah songs.
