About Devorah

There is nothing more inspiring to me than to witness a child making that magical and hopefully life-long connection with the arts and their own creativity and confident self-expression. To foster that bond in the lives of so many amazing children has been a true blessing in my life."

(see photos for examples)
Her teaching resume can be viewed at: http://www.geocities.ws/jazzdevorah/resume.html

Devorah has been an Early Childhood teacher for over fifteen years. She is a professional singer and songwriter with a long history of professional credits as a performer and writer.

Her unique storytelling and music and art programs and performances are always interactive and highly engaging. She plays guitar and keyboard and incorporates movement activities in her all of her music programs and incorporates art-making in her Creative Arts programs.

Devorah has a love for working with children with all kinds of "special needs" and has helped many in private one to one sessions as well as in the classroom:

"All of the Creative Arts that we explore have been an empowering bridge for the children that I have worked with...including those with "special needs" challenges. Something I'm shown consistently is that music in particular provides a pathway which I can rely on to "get through" and enable a connection that is sometimes so illusive in other settings. I look for ways of meeting each child where they are and guiding them into the world of the creative arts through hands-on experiences in music, art, dance, drama, creative writing.

There is nothing more inspiring to me than to witness a child making that magical and hopefully life-long connection with the arts and their own creativity and confident self-expression.To foster that bond in the lives of so many amazing children has been a true blessing in my life."

New York audiences from The Central Park Zoo to the Children's Museum of Manhattan have loved her interactive concerts and performances. As a teacher, her unique ability to combine her talents in Music, Jazz, Art, Theater, Story-telling with her Early Childhood Education and Orff Teacher education provide Devorah a unique combination of riches to give to her students.

CreativeArts Workshops descriptions and other Programs offered:
I offer one to one in-your-home afterschool sessions and the following :

These collaborative workshops /classes work well in
Afterschool Enrichment programs, Museum programming, Community and Synagogue venues,
and in-home. Small groups from one to 6 kids.
They can be held as ongoing classes or as a stand alone one-time experience.
The Make-A-Story and Make-A-Song Collaborative Workshops also work exceptionally well with inter-generational groups .

DESCRIPTIONS:
- Imagine That Workshop

In a playful atmosphere, the children explore and expand their greatest inner resource: their imagination! The workshop creates ongoing multifaceted projects incorporating art, puppetry, creative writing, creative dramatics, music and movement. Each week focuses on a different art form. Linking hands-on aesthetic experiences within the Arts creates an exciting learning forum that fosters expanded self-esteem, self-discovery.

- Create-A-Story Workshop Child-centered adventures through the Creative Arts using expanded story-telling as the foundation. This is an ongoing workshop using a collaborative story-making process which weaves together Narrative Creative Writing, Improvisation, Art, Music-making, Song-writing, Creative Dramatics, Puppetry and humor through individual and group process. Each child creates their own original stories and books as well as group generated stories, enactments and songs.

- Lets Make A Book
There are many exciting and enriching ways to make books that can be either ongoing projects that connect week to week, or as a standalone, one class project. Watch this page for some beautiful examples of children's books that I will be uploading.

- Lets Make A Song
One example of this workshop is a program I designed and led at The Children's Museum of Manhattan for an Environment Awareness program. Using similar techniques as in Create-A-Story, the audience participated in creating lyrics to a song about what each person can do everyday to help our planet and ourselves. Then we all performed it together!

- Creative TorahArts Workshop- using story, art, music, drama to connect with Torah.

- Creating Collaborative "Midrash"
In this group, the children and or adults are creating as a group- ongoing original "midrash" stories. In an interactive process, their own midrash is created through group collaboration using powerful Jewish stories as a foundation.

- Shabbat and Jewish Holiday-themed programs for intergenerational groups and children

These programs incorporate any of the above foundations or can be custom-designed for your synagogue, school or group's needs .
Bringing generations together in this totally interactive, creative and unique way is a very special group program that Devorah offers.
These Shabbat and Jewish Holiday based programs and family workshops are a wonderful pathway to connection and lend well to synagogues, women's groups, schools and senior residences, community centers.

💛

"I had been on assignment at a Detroit Montessori school for two days, and shot hundreds of photos. Some were very good, but I knew I hadn't gotten THE shot. That afternoon, as we all sat on the floor in a circle listening to a story, I bowed my head. When I raised my head, this little girl leaned over to lay her head on the little boy's lap. He very gently lifted his arm to receive her. I call this photo 'The Age of Innocence."

Everyone has stories inside. I love working with adults too, to interactively create spontaneous stories together. It is a magical, flowing experience! ! It works with two people to larger groups and is wonderfully connecting to do with families and other groups! It works really well in "zoom" spaces as well as in person. Lets make a story and a song and some puppets to act them out! Offering in person and zoom workshop sessions .Contact me to schedule or ask questons!

This is a story interactively created by a group of 4 Three-year-old children in my "Create-A-Story Class"! Yes,they were 3 years old!! I had taught them some of my songs about Monsters and The Man in the Moon and you can see how those characters became part of this new story they made together! It's a wonderful interactive process that I developed that works well with all ages including adults and multigenerational groups as small as two people to large groups.
In this group of three year olds, they narrated their words and I wrote them down verbatim, not changing or prompting one word of theirs and they illustrated with drawings.
