This unique and fascinating program provides a forum for international students currently living in the United States to gain the most from their American experience. Thes
e courses are designed to assist international students in interacting directly with Americans through a number of unique learning opportunities, and to help them enjoy and make the most of their time abroad. With a fun and interesting combination of classroom discussions, field trips, community engagement and other activities, students will learn important skills to deal with the cultural and personal challenges they often face as an international visitor in the U.S. while also learning important background knowledge to better appreciate life in the U.S. Program Coursework Requirements
In addition to the 25 hours of class-time during each intensive weekend class, students will also complete an additional twenty hours of supervised academic work including at least five hours of pre-assignments before the weekend of class, and fifteen faculty-mentored project hours after the weekend in order to receive their completion certificate. All hours will be monitored and students will receive valuable one-on-one mentoring from qualified instructors. Students may receive a preliminary completion letter at the end of each weekend if requested that verifies that they have completed 30 of the educational hours for the course, which is the equivalent of two credits. In order for students to receive certification of all 45 educational hours, which is the equivalent of three credits, they must complete all of the additional 15 faculty-mentored hours within two months of the weekend course. Au Pair Weekend was founded in 2006 by Lora and Ben Cook when they realized that something was missing from the American au pair experience: an easy, fast, and exciting way to fulfill the US Department of State’s educational requirement. The Cooks were hosting an au pair who was struggling to find a way to earn her required credits. Nothing was affordable, and none of the college courses she looked into fit well enough with her schedule. Why were there no other options?
Having worked for years with an au pair agency, Lora presented the idea of a weekend course where au pairs could come and earn their credits quickly and easily. She and Ben established a program with a nearby college and hosted their first small class in Boston. It was so successful that within a couple years, they began expanding the curriculum and the course to other cities.
Fourteen years later, and Au Pair Weekend now hosts exciting weekend courses in 10 different major cities around the US. Thousands of au pairs have taken our classes and made lifelong friends. Many who come through our courses have told us it was one of their favorite experiences so far in the US.
It might sound too good to be true, but at APW we are committed to offering more than just a weekend stuffed with classes. We are crafting an EXPERIENCE by selecting staff, classes, activities, and excursions that allow au pairs to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in some of the country’s most iconic cities. We are constantly growing and improving our organization in order to better serve our au pairs. In 2017 we launched classes in three new locations: Washington DC, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. In 2018 we launched a program in New York City and increased the total number of weekends offered during the year. In 2019 we introduced our regional pop-up courses and held our first one on the Big Island in Hawaii. What else do we have in store for 2020? We can’t wait to show you!
