The Dance Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University announces a newly appointed doctoral study fellowship for a new, incoming student, starting in academic year 2021-2022 and continuing through academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. T.C. limits the eligibility for Doctoral Fellowships to new, incoming students. Interested applicants must submit an application for doctoral study in Dance Education. Priority consideration for the Doctoral Fellowship will be given to all applicants who submit a complete doctoral degree application by May 1st, 2020. The final deadline for all applications and additional scholarship opportunities is June 1st, 2020.

The Doctoral Program in Dance Education views dance as an essential form of embodied experience through which people imagine and create, shape identity and understand cultures, teach, learn, research, and communicate meaning about diverse human experiences. Our community welcomes dance educators who celebrate a rich variety of dance traditions and who are deeply committed to enacting our mission to cultivate educational opportunities that are accessible, inclusive, equitable, and excellent for all dance learners. The doctoral students in our community are interested in researching a wide range of educational issues impacting critically underrepresented sectors of the field, such as PK-12 dance education, high-school to post-secondary transition, university dance teacher preparation, teacher advancement, and dance teacher certification for example. Our doctoral program dovetails with the Arnhold Institute for Dance Education Research, Policy, and Leadership which serves as a core training ground for doctoral students, providing opportunities to research and connect with faculty, fellows, and affiliated global scholars.

Recognized by scholars as the primary incubator for the development of dance education as a field in PK-12 schools and universities, Teachers College has played a principal role in cultivating and empowering dance education leaders for over 100 years. Nested in the arts mecca of New York City and as the nation’s premier institution in the teaching of teachers in all fields, TeachersCollege is the ideal place to earn a doctorate in dance education and to join the legacy of dance education leadership.

Teacher Toolbox Series: Teaching Diverse Students in Early Childhood Classrooms
Thursday, March 4
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (EST)

We live in an increasingly diverse world, where we frequently interact with people who are different from us. Our schools also mirror this diversity. Unfortunately, not all students are represented in our schools. Some are marginalized and discriminated. This treatment can make them feel invisible, isolated, and alienated.

In this webinar, you will gain concrete strategies to create an inclusive learning environment so that all students feel represented and valued. This can develop cognitive, social, and emotional skills and generate empathy and tolerance in our students.

Topics will include:
Classroom décor and diversity
Story time and inclusivity
Developing tolerance through diversity appreciation
Simple assistive and adaptive technologies
Mindful teaching (Hoberman sphere and Pomodoro technique)

About the Presenter

Dr. Fawzia Reza is an early childhood educator and the diversity and inclusion coordinator at the American College of Education. She recently conducted independent research on teaching diverse learners in early childhood classrooms, and she has authored or co-authored several studies that highlight discrepancies in educational systems. Recognizing a lack of South Asian representation in children's literature, she recently wrote a children's book about South Asian children with special needs: Mary and Her New Friends.

COVE is excited to present our newest offering for students and families: the 2020-2021 COVE College Access Workshop Series! In this 5-part series students and their families will learn the basics as well as some insider tips for success from the beginning of your college search to what to do when you actually get to campus. We believe college access is not just about applying for a school, but also about understanding how to prepare to navigate college financially, academically, and socially.

We will explore topics including the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), understanding your admissions offer and financial aid award, and diverse paths to college success including breaking down what the transfer admissions process is, the benefits for students, and steps to prepare to transfer successfully.

These workshops were designed and will be delivered by two financial aid professionals who combined have attended and/or worked at CUNY, the University of Virginia, Amherst College, Harvard University, and Columbia University. We have been affiliated both as students and as volunteers with a number of college access organizations including QuestBridge and 1vyG with a specific focus on the experiences of First Generation/Low Income (FGLI) students and other marginalized groups, and we are excited to share information that will be especially valuable to these groups as well.

Our first workshop, Intro to College Admissions, will be on Monday, December 14th at 7-8:30 p.m. EST. Attendees will discuss college and financial aid options, offering a broad overview of different degree programs, application processes, fee waivers, and scholarship programs. This session has a special focus on the CUNY and SUNY systems and college access opportunity programs (EOP/HEOP and SEEK) available to students in New York State.
