Education systems around the world are redefining what it means to be a successful graduate — not just academically prepared, but adaptable, reflective, and socially aware.
New York State has recently introduced its Portrait of a Graduate, placing these human capabilities at the center of education.
If these are the outcomes we value most…
are we building them early enough — from the very beginning of childhood?

Wearing my academic hat as a Professor at the University of Piraeus and my R&D hat as Kinems’ Chief Scientific Officer, I had the honor of contributing a keynote at the 1st Panhellenic Interdisciplinary Conference: Play & Digital Culture in the City (conference.homoludens.org/gr), co-organized by .
We are grateful to the organizers for the invitation and for creating a space where play, learning, and digital culture come together so meaningfully.
The talk, “Leveraging Digital Games for the Socio-Emotional & Holistic Development of Young Children,” shared our 11-year journey of developing the Kinems multimodal game-based learning platform — co-designing with teachers, special educators, and therapists, drawing insights from research, and embracing emerging technologies, including AI, to support every child’s whole development.
A key focus was how a multi-modal game-based learning approach helps nurture social-emotional learning (SEL) skills in early childhood.
I also presented our newest research direction within the Erasmus+ eSEL project (https://tomansa.cy/projects/esel.html), exploring how playful, embodied experiences can help detect and measure SEL skills in kindergarten learners.
Moments like this remind us why we innovate: to empower educators, inspire young learners, and advance evidence-based, human-centered approaches to learning.

Early childhood is where hearts, souls and minds take shape. 💚
On World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded that mental well-being starts early — with children learning to understand emotions, build empathy, and connect through play.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) isn’t just an educational approach — it’s a foundation for lifelong resilience and kindness. When combined with active, play-based and movement-rich environments (like those supported by the Kinems platform), SEL becomes a joyful journey for every child. 🌱
Let’s nurture emotionally strong, empathetic learners — one playful step at a time.
