Today ILSA had the pleasure of hosting the Honorable Dorothy Harbeck in her capacity as the Eastern Region VP of the National Association of Immigration judges. Students learned trial advocacy skills and about the immigration court system in general. There were some laughs and a lot of learning - never miss a chance to hear this woman teach!

Birthright citizenship was fought for and defined by generations of African Americans, and upheld in the Wong Kim Ark Supreme Court case of 1898 during the height of racist attitudes and policies against Chinese in America. Birthright citizenship is part of what makes America great.

Pictured: Wong Kim Ark, in a photograph taken from a 1904 U.S. immigration document. Born in San Francisco in 1873, Wong Kim Ark was denied re-entry to the United States after traveling to China. Wong Kim Ark challenged the government’s refusal to recognize his citizenship in an 1898 Supreme Court case which ruled that a child born in the U.S. to parents of foreign descent is a citizen of the United States.

As an organization rooted in facilitating the free movement of people around the world, ILSA is inherently diverse. We refuse to stand for any form of racism or discrimination in the NYLS community and ask that our members join us in addressing these difficult yet profoundly important issues on campus and beyond.

Tomorrow, New York Law School and the Student Organizations are hosting a town hall in response to the recent events on campus. We welcome all students to this open forum and to share their concerns with the NYLS community.

Hi NYLS!

A week from tonight, ILSA will be hosting Dorothy Harbeck in her capacity as the Eastern Region Vice President of the National Association of Immigration Judges.

She'll talk about the structure of immigration courts, how the system differs from criminal courts, some of the unique issues that affect immigration courts, and some pointers for future practice in immigration court.

This is a DINNER event and will be small enough that you will get to chat with our guest and ask her questions in her Union capacity.

Don't miss out on this learning and networking opportunity! And bring a friend!

RSVP to [email protected].
