This Women’s History Month, we’re shining a light on women who dedicated their life’s work to advancing the mission of the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing. For our final feature, we’re honoring alumna Joan Hansen Grabe ’60. Grabe is a registered nurse, a member of the Hunter College Hall of Fame, and a recipient of an honorary doctorate from Hunter College. As a benefactor, Joan Grabe endows the dean position in the nursing school, helping the school appoint excellent nurse leaders to this important role.

After working as a nurse in acute and critical settings for a few years, Sarah Jordan, Lauder Fellow Class of ’25, decided that becoming a nurse practitioner was the right next step in her career. A firm believer that healthcare is a human right, she witnessed how disparities in healthcare access impact patient outcomes, especially in underserved communities, and knew she wanted to be part of the solution.
The Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program has empowered her to focus on what truly matters: learning about health equity. From hands-on clinical experience in the South Bronx to learning alongside other Lauder Fellows, the program has reinforced her passion for accessible, quality care. Sarah is committed to serving NYC’s communities long after the fellowship ends.

Did you know that the Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing, which joined Hunter College in 1969, was the first school in America to use Florence Nightingale's nursing principles? Her technique led to improved hygiene standards that dramatically decreased deaths in war zones.
Today, Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing is still committed to upholding our legacy of excellence by providing a best-in-class education for nursing students. Our programs are built with the intention of engaging underserved communities and addressing disparities in nursing care. We’re continuing to lead the way for nursing education through our Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowships, an innovative new program that aims to improve health equity in New York City.
