Parents that sold pretzels can pick up their order on November 22, 2013 12-6 pm in the Parent Room (132).
Update BECS Security – The Parent Association Executive Team had several meetings with our principal in regards to the lack of security at BECS. We attended the October 28, 2013 Board meeting and the Parent Association stressed the importance of lack of security at BECS. We expect a response at the December 18, 2013 meeting.
The Parent Association reviewed the NYC Dept of Education Progress Report, BECS was given a grade of F for 2012-2013 Student Progress dropped to F, Student Performance C, and School Environment C.
The Parent Association would like the following questions answered:
Did BECS identify the students and grades that are struggling
Did BECS inform the struggling students parents/guardians
What does BECS have in place to assist the struggling students
How would parents be kept informed about struggling students going forward
The Parent Association recommend that BECS hire a certified Social Worker or School Psychologist, students feel more comfortable discussing issues/concerns with someone other than their parents/guardians or BECS Administration.
The Parent Association has outlined the following Prohibited Student Conduct and would like the BECS Administration to review and implement:
Prohibited Student Code
Students may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and/or expulsion from school for:
1. Engaging in Insubordinate and/or Disorderly Conduct. Example of insubordinate and/or disorderly conduct include, but are limited to:
1.1 Violating the Dress Code: Parent(s) guardian may be required to pick up
children who are not properly dressed for school, bring the missing Dress Code items
to the school, or authorize the student to return home to retrieve the necessary items
as students may not be permitted to attend class. Violations of the dress code also may
result in additional disciplinary consequences.
1.2 Arriving to Class Unprepared: When class begins, students must be prepared
And have all necessary materials (books, organized binder, paper, pencil, etc.).
1.3 Failing to Complete Homework: Completing homework is essential to the
success of individual students and the classroom community. Students are expected
to complete all assignments on time.
1.4 Arriving late to School or Class: Student tardiness disrupts class,
inconvenience others, and often results in academic difficulties. Students may
not be late to school, class or required instruction.
1.5 Disrupting Class and Preventing Teaching: The School can fulfill its
mission only if classrooms are safe and teaching is uninterrupted. Students may
not interfere with or disrupt class or the education process.
1.6 Being Disrespectful toward a Staff Member or His/Her
Designee(s): The School cannot function properly if students are permitted to
be disrespectful toward adults. For that reason, students may not be disrespectful
toward a staff member or any other adult associated with the School.
1.7 Lying to a Staff Member or His/Her Designee(s): Honesty is an
essential element of personal character and is needed to build a community based
on trust and respect. Students are not permitted to lie or attempt to conceal the truth.
1.8 Failing to Comply with the Lawful Directive(s) of a Staff Member
Or His/Her Designee(s): Failing to comply with the lawful directives of teachers,
school administration, other school employees, or their designee(s) is unacceptable.
1.9 Being Disrespectful toward a Student: If students do not feel physically
and emotionally safe in a school, teaching and learning are made more difficult.
Therefore, students may not be disrespectful toward other students.
1.10 Using Abusive or Profane Language or Treatment: Students may not
abusive, threating, lewd, vulgar, coarse, or degrading language or gestures (including
racial epithets or sexist or homophobic remarks).
1.11 Bullying: The school is committed to providing its students and staff with an
educational and working environment that is safe, secure, promotes respect, dignity,
equality and is free from bullying. The school prohibits bullying on school grounds,
school buses, and at school sponsored activities, programs and events including those
taking place off school property. Bullying for this purpose of this policy is defined
as harassment, aggressive behavior or other overt action, whether verbal or physical,
which is intended, or could reasonably be expected, to cause distress, harm, ridicule,
humiliate and/or intimidation. Bullying can be face-to-face, or carried out by phone,
over the internet and other ways directed at another person through the “posting”
of sensitive and/or private information.
1.12 Fighting or Unwanted Physical Contact: The School’s students may not
fight with other students from the School or any other school. Harassing, pushing,
touching or any form of unwanted physical contact is not tolerated.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR HOMEWORK
Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework
Avoid having your child/children do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.
Help your child with time management
Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don’t let your child/children leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.
Be positive about homework
Tell your child/children how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child/children acquires.
When your child/children asks for help, provide guidance, not answers
Giving answers means your child/children will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child/children that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for him or her
If homework is meant to be done by your child/children alone, stay away
Too much parent involvement can prevent homework from having some positive effects. Homework is a great way for students to develop independent, lifelong learning skills.
Stay informed
Talk with your child/children teacher. Make sure you know the purpose of homework and what your child/children class rules are.
Help your child/children figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework
Have your child/children do the hard work first. This will mean he or she will be alert when facing the biggest challenges. Easy material will seem to go fast when fatigue begins to set in.
Watch your child/children for signs of failure and frustration
Let your child take a short break if he or she is having trouble keeping his or her mind on an assignment.
The Parent Association is asking all parents/guardians to:
Make sure your student/students is in school, on time (by 7:30AM), every day
Make sure your student/students comes to school in uniform, well rested ready to start the day
Let BECS know if you think your student/students may need to be absent or tardy
Encourage your student/students to come directly to school when he/she arrives in the morning
Instruct your student/students to go directly home at dismissal

BROOKLYN EXCELSIOR CHARTER SCHOOL PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
The objective of the Parent Association is to provide support and resources to the school for the benefit and educational growth of the children; to develop a cooperative working relationship between the parents and leadership of our school; to develop parent leadership and build capacities for greater involvement; to foster and encourage parent participation on all levels; and to provide opportunity and training for parents to participate in school governance and decision making.
PRINCIPAL CORNER FROM MR. ADAM STEVENS
Though many of you may have known me as your principal in residence, I would like to take this opportunity to formally reintroduce myself. Greetings everyone, my name is Adam Stevens and I am your new principal here at Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School. I want to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself as well as my vision for BECS. I have been involved in the NYS Education system for the past eleven years, including teacher, college adjunct instructor, assistant principal and principal in residence.
I am excited and inspired by the work we’ve done together so far, but the tough work has just begun. To succeed in college, in 21st century careers, and in life, our students need to master basic skills-but they also need to learn to think creatively, solve problems, make effective arguments, and engage in debates. Each day when I enter the doors of the school, I am encouraged that one day our students will become doctors, lawyers, artists, mechanics, Olympians, or perhaps even teachers-and will have a profound impact on society.
By choosing, BECS, you’ve already taken the first step to setting your child on a path to college and career readiness. Our goal at BECS is to raise standards for our students’ work in order to equip our students with the skills they’ll need later in life. I encourage you to look at your child’s notebook every day and see the work they are doing, this work has Common Core-aligned tasks, rubrics, unit supports, and includes more rigorous standards.
The work we do is life-changing both for the students we serve and for each of us. I’ll start by thanking you for your daily commitment to our children. I am confident that our work in the classroom will result in richer instructional experience and robust student learning. As a great equalizer, education has been less about where one comes from and more about where one is going. We have a chance to change the lives of our students, to develop and hone the necessary skills for them to compete and become productive members of society.
I believe in facilitating partnerships that sustain academic excellence, this involves ongoing work and collaboration with parents, staff, and community members who share a common vision for our students. At BECS it has been important for me that we support our families through programs leveraged from our CBO, to develop our staff with authentic professional development and to have engaging lessons with real world applications for our students. As we prepare our students for middle school, high school, college, and for life outside the classroom, it will be important to refocus our efforts on developing core skills in critical thinking skills; we have to develop independent young adults who have the academic skills, social competencies, and career training to make the most of their lives.
Thank you for choosing BECS and I look forward to working closely with you.
OUTSTANDING TEACHER’S CORNER—thanks for your knowledge and expertise, and for taking on the challenge of teaching BECS scholars with grace, humor, and enthusiasm. You make a difference!
