🎉❄️ Winter Celebration Magic! ❄️🎉
Our school was a comfy-cozy wonderland today as kids and staff rocked their favorite jammies and slippers for a winter-break send-off! We swirled peppermint lollipops in hot cocoa from our deluxe cocoa bar, crafted snowmen out of pipe cleaners, and tested our winter-holiday trivia. It was such a sweet end to the first semester of school.
We wish all our students, families, and faculty a joyful and restful winter break! 🌟❤️

This week, students from our three oldest classes had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage’s exhibit, “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark,” specifically designed for young people (ages 9 and up). The exhibit brought to life the incredible story of the courage and moral fortitude of the Danish people—both Jewish and non-Jewish—who worked together and risked their lives to save nearly 95% of Denmark’s Jewish population during the Holocaust. The Danes were steadfast in their belief that all lives are worth saving.
We are full of gratitude to the Museum of Jewish Heritage for bringing their story with us and so proud of our students’ maturity and empathy as they engaged with the powerful stories and lessons.

❄️✨ Our students got into the winter spirit with a creative snowglobe project! Using glycerin, glitter, LED lights, and their imaginations, they designed miniature holiday wonderlands while learning STEM concepts like engineering design, viscosity, and fluidity.
Let us know if you’d like to learn how to do this project at home!

WEDS loves to read! 📚 Check out all the students, parents, and teachers sharing their excitement about books yesterday. From the morning Book Fair to afternoon read-alouds with Rosie 🐶, Ms. Cat, and other fan favorites, kids were cozying up with novels, graphic novels, anime, historical fiction, and more all day.
Thank you, parents, for making I Love to Read Day and the Book Fair such a success. Happy reading!

We were honored to welcome Debbie Zlotowitz, a WEDS Trustee, for a meaningful visit with our three oldest classes. Debbie provided an age-appropriate and thoughtful introduction to the history and context of the Holocaust, preparing our students for next week’s field trip to the “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark” exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, where she also serves as a docent.
With her insight and compassion, Debbie spoke beautifully about the resilience and strength of the human spirit, leaving us all moved and inspired.
Thank you, Debbie, for sharing your knowledge and heart with our community. 🙏❤️

A string trio from the Manhattan School of Music demonstrated their instruments and performed for us this morning! Students learned all about the violin and double bass and listened to work by composers Camille Saint-Saëns, Johann Sebastian Bach, and…Taylor Swift. Thank you, Manhattan School of Music, for filling our school with gorgeous music! 🎻🎼

🐾💖 Rosie Update! 💖🐾
We’re happy to share that our sweet school dog, Rosie, did wonderfully with her spay surgery and is now resting and recovering at home. She’s getting lots of love and care so she can be back at school with her favorite students soon! 🐶

After learning about the mechanics of simple machines, Ms. Marks’ and Ms. McGowan/Mr. Sherman’s classes applied their knowledge to everyday objects. Is a paint roller a wheel-and-axle machine or a wedge machine? Are window blinds a lever machine or a pulley one? What about a stapler? Scissors? Comment with your answers!

We’re always thrilled when our alums come back to visit! This week, we welcomed Oliver, Gloria, and Olive, each of whom joined us at different grade levels but returned together, still connected to our community. They shared valuable insights with our team on creating a strong middle-to-high school transition, reflecting on how WEDS prepared them to be focused, engaged members of their classrooms. These visits remind us of the power of lasting relationships in every student’s journey.

Ms. McGowan’s and Mr. Sherman's students answered one of life's biggest questions today: How many drops of water can a penny hold? 🤔 Even more profound: What if the water is soapy?
We don't want to spoil this simple science experiment for you, but the answers are surprising! Try it!

Happy Diwali! 🪔 Our students learned all about the Hindu festival of lights—the most important Hindu holiday—this week. We were so lucky to have a WEDS parent visit us to share the history of the celebration, as well as her personal traditions! Students made their own colorful clay lamps—called diyas—and paper lanterns to symbolize the inner light that protects against spiritual darkness. Our students' inner lights shine bright! ✨✨
