Vision

We envision a world where every child in NYC has access to world-class training in the arts in an environment that emphasizes rigorous training, stimulates creativity, builds self-confidence, and adds a dimension of beauty to their lives, empowering them to become the creative thinkers and innovative leaders of tomorrow.

During the 2025-2026 school year, you made HSA a place where young artists discover what they are capable of.

The impact of our programs speak for themselves:

▶️ 17 graduating pre-professional students are all headed to top-notch universities with over $750K+ in total scholarships awarded across the class.

▶️ 14 school and community outreach programs, and 39 partnerships with community centers and arts organizations with names you might recognize (Guggenheim, Madison Square Garden and the Museum of the City of New York, to name a few)

▶️ And most importantly: 2,000+ students served

But the playing field for young artists in New York City isn’t level. Serious training in even one discipline at a comparable institution runs $3,000–$8,000 a year.

At HSA, we offer the highest caliber of training at a fraction of the price. This past school year, we distributed $603,500 in scholarships across our pre-professional training program last year, making world-class, conservatory-style arts training completely free for the students who need it most, plus $62,610 in financial aid and merit scholarships to our general enrollment students, ensuring every young artist has a real shot.

As we approach the close of our fiscal year on June 30, we are working to raise $75,000 to sustain and expand the transformative arts education experiences that HSA provides to young people across Harlem and New York City.

Please consider making a donation—$25, $50, $100, whatever you can give— to help us reach that goal. Donation link: https://hsanyc.org/giving/

Last week, we were honored to be among the 10 recipients of Alvin Bragg’s grants to community organizations that will be supporting gun violence prevention initiatives this summer. Our president & CEO James Horton welcomed everyone. Closing the program was a beautiful performance by HSA student .aderinsola.m.

According to the press release:

“For the fifth consecutive summer, the Office’s funding will provide
community-based organizations the ability to compensate young New Yorkers for engaging in meaningful programs — including career readiness, self-expression, and community activation — intended to address the root causes of youth gun violence.”

This prevention award builds on the 5th straight year of double-digit shooting declines in Manhattan.

The summer youth program at HSA, called Lead the Change, is a six-week empowerment program for youth ages 14-21. Young people will engage in discussions and creative activities focus on gun violence prevention, career readiness, college preparation, leadership develop and essential life skills.

All young people who successfully complete the program will receive a stipend.

The program runs July 6- August 14 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of each week from 6-8pm.

7:00pm – The Nat King Cole Generation Hope Ensemble challenges young performers to find their own voice within the classic sounds of jazz and swing. By blending rigorous musical training with a focus on social impact, we empower our musicians to see their instruments as tools for community connection. We bridge the gap between tradition and the modern stage, turning classic inspiration into contemporary innovation.

7:30pm – Pianist Emmet Cohen is one of the leading voices of his generation, known for his joyful swing, expressive lyricism, and deep connection to the jazz tradition. A multifaceted artist and bandleader, he has performed with legends including Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, and Christian McBride, and is the creator of the internationally acclaimed Live From Emmet’s Place livestream series.

Joining Cohen are bassist Joey Ranieri and drummer Joe Farnsworth, one of the most respected rhythm sections in jazz today.

Special guest vocalist Georgia Heers, an internationally recognized rising star, brings her luminous voice and heartfelt interpretations of the Great American Songbook.

Together, they deliver an evening of vibrant swing and timeless jazz storytelling.
