Is your child reading the words… or memorizing them? 👀

Here’s an easy way to check.

Have your child read a few made-up words.

These are called nonsense words.

They can’t memorize them because they’ve never seen them before.

They have to use their letter sounds to read them.

If they can read them, their reading foundation is strong.

If they struggle, there may be some skills they still need to learn.

Try it with your child!

This is how I teach kids to read Magic E words.

But I don’t call it the Magic E.
I call it the Enemy E. 😈

Why?

Because it’s tricky.
It’s sneaky.
And it’s bossy.

It tells the other vowel
to say its name.

Kids need to be explicitly taught
how to read these words.

Watch how I break it down
and show exactly what to do.

Teaching it this way makes the rule
much easier for kids to understand.

Did you know that rhyming is more than having the same ending sound.

Rhyming words have the same middle AND ending sounds.

Cat → hat
Light → night

same ending sound but different middle sounds, so they do not rhyme:

Cat → cot
Both words end with the /t/ sound, but their middle sounds are different: /ă/ and /ŏ/.

Listen closely to the whole ending of each word—not just the final sound! 👂✨📚

Here are 3 signs your child may be struggling with reading:

1️⃣ They mix up letters and sounds.

2️⃣ They guess at words instead of sounding them out.

3️⃣ They struggle with rhyming or counting syllables.

These are early signs that your child may need extra reading support.

As a reading specialist and owner of Dolphin Reading, I’ve assessed thousands of kids.

One HUGE thing I notice is
kids are often saying their letter sounds wrong.

Sometimes they’re even taught
to say them the wrong way.

And this matters.

If your child says the sounds wrong,
blending words becomes much harder.

In this video, I show you
how the sounds should be pronounced.

Ask your child to say them.
Then tell me how they did!

Watch how I use sound boxes to help children spell words. ✏️

In this video, the child is spelling the word space.

We tap out each sound we hear and put it in its own box.

S gets a box.
P gets a box.
A gets a box.

The C and silent E share a box because the E doesn’t make its own sound.

Sound boxes don’t just help with spelling — they help children become stronger readers too.

Word Chains are something I use with my students every day.

They give kids practice manipulating sounds in words.

We work on hearing and changing beginning, middle, and ending sounds.

That is HUGE for becoming a strong, confident reader.

In this video, I’m showing you a simple Word Chain you can try at home.
