Did you know there are only 5 main vowels… A, E, I, O, U (and sometimes Y)… but together they make around 20 different sounds?! 😳

That’s a LOT for kids to remember.

One vowel can make multiple sounds.
Then kids learn a rule… and suddenly the rule gets broken. 🙃

No wonder so many children struggle with reading and sounding out words.

Reading is not natural. It has to be taught explicitly and systematically so children can truly understand how sounds and words work.

Very often, children who struggle with reading do not struggle because something is “wrong” with them. They struggle because they were never taught to read the right way.

Reading needs to be taught systematically and explicitly using methods that are based on science and research that have been proven to be effective.

Children need direct instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency so they can truly learn how to crack the code of reading.

Im not blaming teachers or schools. Many educators were simply never trained in the science of reading, or their school district does not use it with fidelity.

Once children reach third grade and above, schools shift from teaching kids how to read… to expecting them to read to learn.

But what happens when a child still has gaps in phonics, fluency, or phonological awareness?

Yahoo! We are super excited to announce that Dolphin Reading is currently enrolling students in their Summer Phonics Bootcamp. This is a 4-week program for kids entering Kindergarten through 2nd grade who need help building those early reading foundations before the next school year starts.

We’ll work on blending sounds into words, phonological awareness, early phonics skills, and overall reading readiness in a structured, supportive way.

Classes begin July 6 and meet Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 10:00 AM EST or 5:30 PM EST.

When I teach S blends, we start by reviewing the sounds and encoding the words using sound boxes first. Then we decode and read them.

This helps children truly understand how sounds work together instead of just memorizing words. It builds phonological awareness, fluency, confidence, and stronger reading skills overall.
